Okay, I just saw that the new French's Mustard commercial advertises that it's gluten free.

Of course it's gluten free. IT'S MUSTARD! FFS!

Bad that this fad has gotten to the point where stuff that is obviously gluten free, has to advertise itself as such.

Some cheaper mustard out their cut it with different types of rue . Celiac disease works the same way as A lactose intolerance. They are allergies. Period. When people with celiac disease eat foods or use products containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging or destroying villi. Villi normally allow nutrients from food to be absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream. Without healthy villi, a person becomes have been malnourished, no matter how much food one eats. I am I Red Seal Chef. To me some of the outlandish people saying Its just "Fad" is ridiculous. Their the same people that I assume that go out and buy all the crap processed foods that have all the same chemicals in plastic.

Most people are full of #### when they say they are as only 1%Of the American population actually have been diagnosed with the disease. It is estimated that as high as 15% have not.

My issue is not with Celiac's, it's with the pretenders. I've found almost 17-20% of people want gluten free diets, yet Celiacs are 1 in 200 of the population... that just doesn't add up. It's absolutely a fad. You're a chef, so you know we saw the same nonsense with saturated fat nazi's before that got debunked

On the Mustard thing, yeah some gourmet type mustards are going to be mixed with something that contains gluten, like beer, but a regular store bought yellow squeeze mustard isn't.

The number is 1 in 133 people. With Saturated Fats their is no direct link to disease. They will make to fat if you over eat them. Its obesity that leads to the disease's not the saturated fat. Gluten will do the same. Beer belly anyone?Yes some people are just using it to justify healthier eating.

I think so. I think people should still ask for gluten free (not all the time ) but not use that as a reason. I also feel tho that more people need to make sure their not. My girlfriend ended up very sick in the Hospital about 5 years ago for a week and a few days. After the first couple of days the Doctor thought it was crohns Disease it turned out almost a week later they figured out i was Celeics . She was undiagnosed because she never really ate much products with gluten. Then I started using more gluten in her diet (around the time we started dating) and was designated the house cook. That's how she ended up becoming so sick.

I have a problem with the term "Fad" . Better health should never be a fad.

Ouch. sorry to hear that. Celiac isn't fun but at least it didn't get mis-diagnosed.

Sorry didn't catch your edit before about eating too much gluten and getting beer belly or something. Same can be pretty much said for eating too much of anything though.

I say the word fad in this situation because it's not necessarily healthier. Gluten isn't bad for you unless you have an intolerance to it. Going Gluten free if you don't need it can be even worse if you're not careful, since a lot of food containing gluten also contains other essential vitamins that you now have to get elsewhere. Some gluten free food is so processed it's scary.

Slippery slope. If you're celiac or have some other professionally diagnosed intolerance or allergy, then by all means eat gluten free, hopefully the hipsters and idiots move onto the next thing and stop giving you a bad rap.

Gluten free food a usually aren't processed . Its a simple switch from wheat or barley flour to rice flower. Those missing vitimans can be attained though other grains as quinioa, spelt and especially in oats. Oats are rich with the same vitamins and contain such a low amounts of gluten that only 1% of those 1% diagnosed are affected with A large dose.

Rice flour, potato starch, and other gluten free flour substitutes can also be a lot higher on the glycemic index, and of course foods high in GI can increase your chances obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. I'm not saying these specific foods are bad for you , but if you don't have an actual gluten intolerance then why bother?

Same with replacing those lost vitamins elsewhere, absolutely it can be done, but unless you really need too why go through the effort? Although on saying that I also want to add that you should be eating stuff like Quinoa and Oats anyway, not because it's gluten free, but because it's delicious and good for you.

Next time you're at the grocery store look at the things that say gluten free on them. Then read the other ingredients. Gluten free frozen pizza, for example, is still full of processed crap. Just because it's gluten free doesn't mean it's good.

At the end of the day, gluten free doesn't = healthy. If your girlfriend has celiac disease then you know how hard it is to maintain a healthy gluten free diet. Imagine how bad it is for people that just see "Oooh gluten free!" and think that it's healthy for them. That's where I think this fad is dangerous.

I know all that Which Is why I don't shop at Grocery stores. I even can get unpasteurized milk but I can not say where or how. Even If I have too getting local organic and quality foods is cheaper here in Victoria then shopping at Walmart( for comparison) for non organic processed crap.

Believe it or not their is a black market in North America for it. If a person is caught selling it the can have their farm taken away. Every where else in the world its normal for it to be unpasteurized but not here.

Well, it's moderately dangerous and has no scientifically founded benefits over pasteurised milk, so I'm not sure why you'd want if not for some weird diet fad or something on that line.

Well no argument from me on any of that but it doesn't have anything to do with gluten

People who sell raw milk don't feed the Cows any Hormones or extra chemicals in their feed. Other than If you drink it It helps with allergies and asthma , just like if you eat any other locally produced food.

Their can't be to many of us. Its really hard to get. It does taste better tho. Its considered a Fad In the rest of the world its common practice. My buddy from Portugal was surprised by this. Raw milk is everywhere there. I my self never had pasteurized milk until I was 13 and we had to sell our Farm and move.

Well, they can still feed their cows hormones or chemicals, it's farm dependant, not milk dependant.

As for the "asthma/allergies" angle, that's actually pseudoscience. All studies looking into the link between the two showed that living on a farm was actually responsible for any of the links between improved allergies/asthma. Not raw milk.

But hey, drink whatever crazy bacteria milk you'd like! I'm going to go ahead and not have tuberculosis with my cereal.
