Burke wanted the best candidate possible for the job. He went with Treliving. I trust Burke's judgment on the matter, and thus far it looks like a great hire. I don't see anything that stands out in Benning's career that trumps Treliving's, or vice versa, so the question/argument is moot. At least at this point.

Benning and Treliving were both considered top new GM candidates. So I don't think it's worth splitting hairs.

Apparently Burke asked a lot of people around the league who was the best young upcoming GM guy, Treliving was on top of everyone's list. Benning will be a great GM, but Treliving looks to be better fit for the Flames with Burke guiding him.

In 5 years we may have an understanding of which was the better hire but as of right now I am very happy with the hire of Treliving and don't really care that the Flames may have been able to have Benning instead. No use not being positive about things right now as they are.
