Based on his decision making, he had brain damage before the accident.
I think it is all part of the 'invinicibility' factor many athletes believe that they have. Things come to easy for them, so they never consider any of the risks...

I don't know. Everday thousands of bikers don't wear helmets. It only makes sense that a percentage of NFL bikers wouldn't also.
The foolishness of youth more than preceived invincibility perhaps.

We had a motorcycle fatality here last week while I was out of town on vacation. Kid with his girlfriend on the back was doing 130 mph down a city street in an industrial area. Semi pulled out because he saw the headlight way the heck down the street and the speed limit was 40 mph. Needless to say, by the time he got his rig heading the same direction the bike was on him and hit him. Helmets were irrelevant. Driver dead at the scene, girlfriend DOA. Dumb, dumb, dumb. 23 years old and 21 years old. DONE. Now this poor truck driver has to spend the rest of his life wondering what he could've done when it just isn't his fault at all.
I think perceived invincibility is a huge factor in all accidents.

I don't understand why he would take a risk of riding a motorcyle at all let alone without a helmet. The guy has 15 years to play football and make tons of money and then he has 40+ years to enjoy it doing whatever activities he feels like. I would think he could wait for 10 years or so and not put his career in jeopardy.
Now I am not a motorcyle guy so I don't get the appeal of riding them but I would think that it is not so great that risking millions of dollars and a great career would be worth risking it.

Anyone else catch the coverage on TSN last night?
They had an interview with Ben from July 2005 where he talked about riding a motorcycle, and him flat out saying he will never wear a helmet.. but that he will ride as safely as possible.
I feel sorry for his friends and family, and his employers, but not one little bit of sympathy for him.

riding without a helmet is a personal choice. he knew the risks. now people are bashing the state of pennsylvania for not having a helmet law. give me a break.
not having sympathy for the guy seems a bit cold

You'd think a guy who is smart enought to wear a helmet while running around trying to avoid being hit by 300 lb dudes would have enought sense to wear a helmet while riding around trying to avoid 3000 lb cars.
Oh well.
As a motorcycle rider myself, a helmet is the piece of equipement you absolutely do not want to skimp on. Anyone I know who is buying a bike, I tell them the same thing, spend as much money on a helmet as you can.

I saw it today. He also went off on a bit of a "nobody can tell me what to do" tangent. Another reason he gave for not wearing a helmet was that he feels "more free when I ride".
This moron is lucky he can play football.
