xbox needed to create the buzz for the next gen kinect, making it an exciting proposition for the consumer with new cool tangible ideas available at launch. I don't like the idea of paying an extra hundred bucks for a function that has meant little to nothing to me in the past, on the basis that it might be something cool in the future.

I really think public perception of the kinect has been too damaged for it to take mainstream use at this point unless they put a killer feature in there that works well and many developers adopt (which won't happen now since they've no longer made it mandatory).
Consumers initial impression of a very powerful thing. If a feature or a product is not polished enough at launch, people will end up ignoring it the feature/product. For example, in a CNET survey 85% of Apple users do not use Siri because the feature plainly did not work for them right at launch so they never tried using it again. This is likely similar for Kinect and the half hearted software support Microsoft provided for it. They don't seem to learn as this has happened for Vista, Zune, Xbox one launch, etc.
Initial perception is a powerful thing and a large number of people still perceive the MSFT as a flip flopping company that doesn't deserve consumer trust. Now that MSFT themselves have basically said they don't support Kinect, I imagine it'll fade slowly into irrelevance until they manage to put something innovative out like VR. Though a lot of people will see that as copying oculus and morpheus if MSFT does go down that path. Until they start coming out with friendly consumer policies on the onset rather than following the market, that perception'll never change.

Just thinking more on the whole Kinect thing. If they're removing it shortly, there is ZERO reason for them to hold back on releasing in those Tier 2 countries should be able to roll out quickly rather than waiting til September.

They've been forced to play nice with indie developers now and started with the recent ID@Xbox program. I've said before but those poor "Skull of the Shogun" guys got bent over by Microsoft.
And, they still have a pretty damn onerous "launch parity clause" on independent developers. If you want to ever sell your game on the Xbone you MUST release it on their system as the same day as any other ecosystem or they will never let it on the Xbone.
A lot of devs have already panned it given the limited resources of these small developers having to hold back sellable versions (and incur additional operating costs) to finish coding on all ecosystems before they're allowed starting getting revenue back. Can you imagine if the Play store or App store had contract clauses like that?
I could see Microsoft doing a 180 on that at E3.

Oh boy, that spin.
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/why.../1100-6419622/
Why is the PS4 outselling the Xbox One? Microsoft weighs in
"It's hard to really assess the gap in sales," Mehdi said. "[Sony is] in many more markets right now than we are. They're in 40+ markets, we're in 13." The PS4 won't have a such a dramatic regional availability advantage for much longer, as the Xbox One will be released in Japan and 25 other regions in September.
Really? Why TF are you dropping Kinect, doing 180 spins on every possible vision you had for the system and so quickly cutting the price in less than a year? The Microsoft designated "Tier 2" poor ass countries aren't going to make up any material difference. Hell, they're pretty available in those countries right now with the lack of region lock..
Another reason why the Xbox One has fallen behind the PS4 in terms of sales so far is because, according to Mehdi, Xbox 360 owners enjoy their systems more than PlayStation 3 owners do, so they are less inclined to upgrade.
"People have been more satisfied with the Xbox 360 than the PS3, so in that respect people have less of a need to upgrade in the short-term due to regular updates for the Xbox 360," Mehdi said. "We could point to any number of things."
Well damn. People must be MIGHTY satisfied with their Wii, Blackberry Curve and their PSP. Hope they're not honestly believing this PR spin internally, they need to get their crap together for E3.

Actually Sony should be worried if that is right (I tend to agree here) about 360 owners being more happy than PS3 owners because 360 owners will still eventually upgrade and chances are they choose XB1 given their satisfaction with the 360. We are barely more than a half a year into the new generation so I don't think Microsoft needs to be too worried as there's plenty of time here.

Quick question,
Does PS4 have DLNA functionality?
I want a xbox one, but I am kind of leading toward buying a PS4, I only play sport games, so game titles are not a factor.

Well, as a guy who owns both the PS3 and Xbox, and has for over half a decade, they probably aren't far off on the satisfaction angle. My PS3 has been a glorified blueray player for most of its life, while the 360 was the gaming machine. I don't doubt there's some spin involved, but yes, the only reason I haven't upgrade is because I am still fine with a 360 right now.
With that said, it looks more and more like it will be the PS4 I'll be upgrading to if things continue the way they have for the past year with MS.

If I were to decide on which console was the best of the last generation based on my use of them, I would honestly be able to say it was the Wii over the 360 or PS3. The Wii is our go-to multiplayer console, we purchased a lot of games from the Virtual Console, and we put away our GameCube and use it to play GC games, so it blows away the others in terms of time spent on it.
Aside from the Mass Effect trilogy, most of the games I have for the 360 are XBox Live Arcade games (Super Meat Boy, Trials, Shadow Complex, etc.), and the PS3 is used mainly as a blu-ray player (though I played all the Uncharted and God of War games on it, and we played Journey a ton).

Wow, are they delusional? Microsoft all but abandoned releasing new software for 360 over a year ago while Sony was still putting out award winning games. It's the PS3 gamers who have had less incentive to upgrade since they were still playing PS3 games.

no kidding...I have an xbox 360 and a PS3 (and a xbox one and PS4 for that matter)
360 was the better system for the first few years but in the last five or so they totally abandoned making software. You want to talk about innovation? how about innovation in story telling with games like the last of us and variety in series like god of war and uncharted, infamous, ect.
Xbox 360 made shooters and kinect games
Halo, Gears of War, Titanfall, what big microsoft exclusive is not a shooter? Forza? might be a decent game I just don't like racers
I love gears and halo fyi, just saying they don't have the variety

When I do upgrade I will be going from Wii60 to WiiS4 U. XBone just does not interest me as it does not offer a neat name when merged with the Wii/Wii U. This is how I base my console decisions.

Looks like 115,000 Xbones sold in April from NPD. Twitter leaks seem to imply PS4 being nearly 2:1 again for the month. More detail will probably leak out in the next few days.
March (5 weeks) - 311,000 units sold -->62,200 Xbones per week
April (4 weeks) - 115,000 units sold -->28,750 Xbones per week
Xbox 360 apparently had 71,000 sales.
http://news.xbox.com/2014/05/xbox-one-april-npd
With Microsoft announcing the Kinect-less SKU this month but not selling it until June, could we see the 360 outselling the Xbone for May?
Additional context - Xbox 360 historical April sales numbers:
April 2006 - 295K
April 2007 - 174K
April 2008 - 188K
April 2009 - 175K
April 2010 - 185K
April 2011 - 297K
April 2012 - 236K
April 2013 - 130K

"WiiBone" is about as neat as they come. Could even be your gamertag.
