Great guy, bad price.

What on earth has pointed you to this conclusion? I really want to know if there is something there I have the blinders on to, because all I see is the same egotistical self absorbed dbag driving around TO in his bow ties and Bentley.

Let's be honest here...how many players in the last few years have flourished in Toronto? The media eats them up and spits them out, and that's where we as fans get our information. Who are we to judge a guys character when we don't have first hand knowledge. Toronto would be the last place I'd want to go as a player.
I think if put in the right situation Phaneuf would be a good addition to the Flames regardless of his contract. I think we can all agree that the bad part of the contract is the term right? I am interested to hear if the term was 4 or 5 years on his contract , would the opinions would be different?
If the Leafs are expecting Phaneuf to be a rock solid stay at home defenseman, they are crazy. The Leafs put him into situations where he doesn't excel and were hoping for the best. He is an obvious OFD with a great shot from the point and can deliver big hits. I still feel if he was put with a solid DFD he could do well.

Whenever I hear the media overrates Leaf players I laugh. All they do is crap on them 24/7.
The talk that Dion is a 2nd-pairing guy is nuts. There are teams right now in the playoffs fighting for the cup using guys on the first pairing Dion is better then.
It's guys who play in non-hockey markets that get overrated. Please see Nash, Rick or Erikkson, Loui

Please Treliving, we do not need Phanucklehead. He does nothing for the team except cause problems.

Yup. He'll be forced to check his ego, and Detroit doesn't seem to have the issues with gigantic contracts other teams do. Most Detroit fans really don't seem to care what a player is making. So a 7 mil 2nd pairing D won't bother them as much as most markets as long as he's playing his role on the team well.

Dion would not be a second pairing D-Man on Detroit. No chance. Bobacock would play him a hell of a lot.

Dion has never been a "good guy". He was a door nob in high school, a door nob when he first came into the league and probably still a door nob.

If by better you mean can skate like the wind in the neutral with his head down, get to the hash marks and blast the puck 20 feet over the net and then not be bothered to skate back into his zone then I agree with you.
Phaneuf would be a second pairing guy on the Flames behind Giordano and Brodie (possibly Russell as well) and third pairing on most contenders.

Best typo ever.
And Kronwall, Quincey and Smith have established themselves as valuable defenceman on Detroit. Unless Dion has the off-season of a life-time he would absolutely be seeing 2nd pairing minutes while they try and sort out his defensive game.
Dion would be a high-potential project for them. His currently play would be a travesty in Wings silks.

I think Colorado would be a good fit. They can give their first and a goalie prospect for Phaneuf.

I went to PEI last year. Apparantly Dion has a place there and got married there. Most locals I met hate him because he walks around like he owns the place and acts like a dick to most people, especially service staff.
So, I doubt he's changed and is a stand up guy now.

What garbage. second pairing on the Flames? LOL.
And would he be third pairing on that awful Pens defense?
Look around at the "Contenders", their top-pairing guys aren't even considered that good. Teams like Anaheim have guys playing top pairing minutes who aren't even considered top-pairing guys by most in the league.
If you're saying he's not a first pairing on a bottom feeder then you're telling me he's not amongst the top 80 NHL D-Men. Ridiculous.

Yes. Dion played tougher minutes than any NHL player in the entire NHL.
There is no one in the NHL on a "Contender" in the same universe as Dion playing on the 3rd pairing. What ridiculous hyperbole.

I agree. He had a lot of "tough" minutes.
I would still keep Brodie-Gio as our top pairing.

Toughest in the entire NHL. I thin people don't understand how reliable he was. Carlyle is using him too much. He needs help.

By "needs help" do you mean he needs two top pairing defencemen on his team so that he can play second pairing minutes? If so, I agree with you.
