I don't think you know how offside works.. Have you played hockey before?

You can straddle the blue line (and/or touch the blue line with your back skate), you know..

More evidence:

Quote:
The National Hockey League (NHL) and International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) apply similar rules for determining offside. A player is judged to be offside if their skates completely cross the blue line dividing their offensive zone from the neutral zone before the puck completely crosses the same line. In both organizations, it is the position of a player's skates that are important. They cannot use their stick or other part of their body to remain onside. The lone caveat to this rule is that an attacking player's skates may precede the puck into the attacking zone when they are skating backwards and if they are in control of the puck.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offside_(ice_hockey)

The swiss player's back skate seems to be touching the blue line..

EDIT:

Here's some more evidence:

Quote:
When it is mentioned that the player needs one skate at least on the blue line, it is meant that the player must have any part of his skate, boot or blade on the ice in order for it to be legal. If a player has his skate in the air above the blue line then this is considered off-side (if his other skate is located inside the attacking zone) because the player needs to have his skate in physical contact with the ice to be legally on-side.

doesn't look like his skate was on the ice so to me its offside. Anyway it was called offside live both times, was just too loud and nobody noticed. Play wasn't reviewed after the fact the linesman made the call

Yeah, that's the thing for me too... It's so hard to see if his skate is actually on the ice or not

Nice to see Backlund getting an A for Sweden

Hes turning into quite the player, aside from his breakout season points wise, he appears to be a great leader and defensive stud

Looks like his skate is on the ice to me. It looks like he's purposely dragging it to stay onside and was successful, and the call was botched.

No points for Johnny today? So now it's 3 games all year without a point for him?

And he was still the best forward on the ice today, made a lot more happen than the actual point getters.

We put Reimer in net.

And gave Monahan under 10min.

I don't know what it is but it just seems like Backlund flipped a switch early in 2014. He seems to have gotten over a hump and now looks like a confident dynamic player. Hope he can carry that into next season and continue to trend up!

the switch seemed to flip after his healthy scratches. Perhaps being in the press box helped him see something? Or maybe it was just a wake-up call?

That could have something to do with it but also he's hitting the prime of his life for a hockey player. His strength, speed and confidence has caught up to what he could do when playing against people of his own age. IIRC he was a stand out in the World's Juniors.

Don't forget Backs had a bad run on injuries too, every time he seemed like he was going to get going he'd get injured and when he came back he wouldn't be the same player.

He credits a coach/mentor (can't remember who) who told him to hold onto the puck a little longer in order to make more plays.

“I talked to my coach at home, my personal trainer. He was here visiting me for a week,” Backlund said. “So, he was giving me a few tips, mentally and after the games, too. Another coach I work with, Darryl Belfry, a skills coach and playmaking coach. He works with Patrick Kane and a bunch of guys. Every couple weeks, I’ll get a video where he’ll tell me what I’ve done right.”
Quote:
“Pretty much right after that, it started clicking,” said the six-foot, 198-pound pivot who was Calgary’s first-round pick from the 2007 draft. “I obviously had meetings with the coaches here but it’s nice to have guys outside (of the team) that only focus on myself and look, personally, what I can get better at … it’s been paying off lately.”
