Of course. Nothing to lose but money if things go sour. Just fire him and move on, but I think he deserves an extension and will be a better coach with an extension.

What could he possibly do to save his job in the short term? He is going to play his best players regardless. It's not like he can go out and make a trade for a veteran.

Hands down there should be a summer extension and I believe there will be for the entire coaching staff. The reason why you don't just wait and see is because players may take that as a sign that the team is not sold on him.
There is no room for deviation from this hard working culture moving forward. If at a tough point in the season where the team is on a losing streak, tired, slumping offensively, and Hartley is trying to push through by working your ass off, players might think that it would be pretty easy to roll over and let the team bring in a fresh voice in the off season. Not a fantastic mental process, but we never know what will go through a guy's mind when he's at his breaking point.
There is not a single reason I can think of not to extend for two more seasons, but to keep Hartley and the players focused on day to day improvement seems like a no brainer to me.

I believe in the Jays.

Wait and See. No extension right now... revisit again closer to the end of next season. Maybe they'll be a better option and I don't want the Flames to fritter away money needlessly plus replacing a coach after just giving him an extension looks bad.

If players give up the hard effort because they don't think management is fully sold on Hartely, then the flames have a lot more problems than coaching.

Yes please,
I am sick of the rotating door of coaches we've gone through since Sutter stepped down from coaching.

I didn't say the flames had a coaching problem. It was more of a shot at players if they give up just because Hartely is not signed before start of season.
I think flames players will play hard and Hartely will get as much out of them as they can. Come January I think he gets extended .

I think he's deserving of one unless something drastic happens and he loses the locker room. Til then keep him on 2 year deals.

So long as the Flames come out of the gates with the fire and effort of last season, I see a big Christmas bonus for Hartley in the way of a new contract.

Fair enough. I just don't see the point in waiting. Just seems like pu$$y footing around. He's their guy, they have said as much, act decisively and drive that pile deep into the ground so we can really start building here. Let every player that puts on that jersey know that if you're having a rough time with Bob Hartley's Calgary Flames, then you're the problem, and you will be gone.
If we wait until January, I won't have a massive issue with it, but I'd prefer it happens now. However, all this, 'but what if there is a nice shiny object come available next spring?' talk is for losers.

Yes.
Before Burke hired Treliving he said that he hoped the new GM would extend Hartley

Yes, and before the season starts to a 2 yr extension (added to the remaining 1).
I don't want him coaching to keep his job. I want him coaching to help develop our team.

Hartley deserves to at least coach until the end of his contract. I'd offer him an extension during or after the upcoming season.
Feaster's best move was hiring Bob.

He coached a rebuilding team to finish pretty much where it was supposed to. Its not like he's turned the Flames into a playoff team.
Wait and see how the year progresses.

I like the fact that it wasn't only the Flames brass giving high praise for Hartley's effort this season. The simlicity of it for me is, Hartley won't last one hot second on the open market after this past season. Teams will snatch him up.
I'd rather keep the mojo he built flowing for a few more years and see what happens.
whats the worst that can happen? the Flames draft McDavid/Eichel/Hanifin and then get into the Sean Day sweeps?
Yes, extend Bob the rebuilder. for three years. it doesnt hurt us any as coaches get fired mid contract all the time.

With some brutal injuries and goalies who struggled to adapt to North America at first he managed to do quite a bit better than expected IMO. We were supposed to be one of the worst in the league but we were quite a bit ahead of the worst few teams.
You look at the progress from the first half to the second half and its pretty remarkable IMO.
