I am hoping they offer Reilly Smith a 2 year 6 million dollar deal. Bruins have no cap space and would be hard pressed to match but they would get a 2nd round pick in return.

Odd post as some of those players are real possibilities to be Flames next season. Would not be surprised to see Virbata a Flame based on Treliving's familiarity with him. Winnik would be great as well.

I am so excited for draft weekend. I think the flames make a couple moves tat surprise people. Cammy has to be replaced so I see a scoring forward being acquired. Hopefully a Sam slides to 4 and the flames make some trades that immediately give the fan base and pundits confidence in Treliving

Granlund/Gaudreau are decent picks to make the team, I have them as a few of our strongest contenders to make the club as rookies.

Wonder if we'll bring Butler back. He's steady but unspectacular. Haven't heard anything on that front lately.
We're thin on defence so I'd like to see Butler brought back. They may have other plans though either through trade or UFA. Even if we do upgrade our defence, having Butler even as a 7th or 8th defenceman won't do any harm to our cap situation.

1.5 mil for TJ Galiardi - I know we have to get to cap floor, but that's not the way to do it.

And like other CPer mention, no Bouma?

Shame, as looks like he did spend some time on this...for what it's worth...

Replace Galiardi with Bouma and now you're cooking.

I don't remember a point all season where this was the sentiment.

For some strange reason Galiardi gets quite a bit of love on Flames Nation.

Must be his good CORSI and possession numbers...Some people there seem to think that having good corsi and possession is the be-all end-all to being a good hockey player.

Wouldn't surprise me if a good number of people on that site didn't actually watch him play hockey at all.

Corsi and Fenwick tell only part of the story. It's like with Backlund. You can see that he's a really good player and is quite efficient. However, his slapshot and wrister are well below average. Because of that he's limited offensively. However, they (Corsi/Fenwick boosters) believe that he's practically the 2nd coming.

He's a good player, but expecting more than a 3rd line C (when we're good) is not going to happen unless he magically gets a better, harder slap shot. He'll be a very talented two way 3rd line C though, which is great, but there is a built in ceiling there that Corsi/Fenwick people can't see in their stats.

Exactly. This is what irritates me regarding people who toot the horn about these 'advanced stats'.

Like I said a moment ago, a good number of people at FN seem to think Galiardi is actually a good hockey player because of this, yet the only thing they have to back that up is those Corsi/Fenwick stats.

Am I the only one who thinks advanced stats like Corsi are almost TOO complicated and kind of silly? Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but they seem to be kind of boring and make evaluating players too in-depth. That article was full of them. It made it pretty boring in my opinion. As for the projected roster, I doubt Orpik would sign here, Vrbata and Winnik are interesting, but the lack of Bouma takes away nearly all credibility in my mind.

Default Cool site

Here's my take for what its worth.

CAPGEEK.COM ARMCHAIR GM ROSTER
CapGeek Armchair GM Roster

FORWARDS
Mike Cammalleri ($6.000m) / Paul Stastny ($7.600m) / Radim Vrbata ($4.500m)
Curtis Glencross ($2.550m) / Mikael Backlund ($1.500m) / Jiri Hudler ($4.000m)
Sven Baertschi ($0.894m) / Sean Monahan ($0.925m) / Joe Colborne ($1.500m)
Paul Byron ($1.400m) / Markus Granlund ($0.768m) / Corban Knight ($0.900m)
Lance Bouma ($1.200m) / Brian McGrattan ($0.750m)

DEFENSEMEN
Mark Giordano ($4.020m) / T.J. Brodie ($2.125m)
Keith Yandle ($5.250m) / Matt Niskanen or Orpik ($4.500m)
Ladislav Smid ($3.500m) / Chris Butler ($2.400m)
Tyler Wotherspoon ($0.925m) /

GOALTENDERS
Karri Ramo ($2.750m)
James Reimer ($2.400m)
Joni Ortio ($1.200m)

BURIED
Shane O'Brien ($1.075m)

RETAINED SALARIES (4.36% of upper limit) for 2014-2015 season only
Dennis Wideman ($2.100m—40.00%)
David Jones ($1.000m—25.00%)

SALARY CAP: $71,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $67,731,667; BONUSES: $4,388,750
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): $3,368,333

Signed Cammy with possible intent to trade at 2014 and/or 2015 draft or 2015 trade deadline if either party so desires. ... if we trade Cammy for picks we still have approx 13 mill in cap space for next yrs UFA/RFA signings (Brodie, ...) and money for another quality RW forward. If we dont trade him, not so bad either, hes a useful quality vet. We cant let him walk for nothing, its bad Karma.

Signed, Bouma, Byron, Colborne, Butler, Ortio - 2-3 yrs max

UFA signings: Statsny, Vrbata, Niskanen or Orpik, Reimer ... perhaps ROR if Statsny not available.

Traded Stajan, Wideman, Jones + 3.1 mill in salary retention to Phoenix for Yandle. This package should be able to land a good YOUNG 1-4 defenceman somewhere if Yandle's not available. Toronto's Reilly? Ideas? I am aware of the trade clauses, but we gotta get rid of em somehow/sowewhere. Phoenix/Toronto just seems feasible for all parties.
Bowmeister @ 5mill sure looks good now, ALWAYS DID even @ 6.5 mill. (Another Feister screw up, not to mention Bartkowski)

Traded Russell or Butler for Reimer's rights (only if he wants to sign here)

Assuming Cammy, Statsny, Vrbata, Orpik/Niskanen want to play here and barring All the usual things like, catastrauphic year ending injuries, sophmore slumps, bad goaltending, ... this team makes the playoffs next year.

Is it really crazy that over the course of a season peoples opinions on a player change and updated based said players play for an entire year?

Seems completely expected and the exact opposite of crazy to me.

The only person that loved him all year was the zamboni driver, Galiardi did most of his work for him falling all over the ice.

Actually a couple seasons ago Backlund had one of the hardest shots in the Flames skills competition.

He is alot stronger than people realize. I'm not debating that he might be better suited as a 3rd line center but he definately doesnt have a terrible shot.

I think Galiardi was playing pretty well towards the end of the season..

However, his overall season performance just sucked, and I think it's time that Gaudreau/Reinhart/Granlund/Baertschi/Poirier/Arnold deserve his roster spot more.

To be honest from most of the comments in the Galiardi trade thread, expectations were relatively consistent with what Galiardi brought this season. He lacked a little more offensively than most would have liked but an energy guy with wheels and some size is exactly what we got.

The lack of hands/vision is a lot harder to accept as a fan when they're a player on your team. That being said, you definitely would not be sad to see us move on with somebody else like Reinhart to see if we can get more offensively.
