My wife is 2 months pregnant and since we are very early in the process have not put too much thought into a name for our baby expected in Nov. The challenege I forsee for us is finding a hybrid name that works in both Japanese and English.

We have not decided whether we will stay in Japan forever or return to Canada.

The anime geek in me actually really likes the name "Hana" for girls. It works out for both Japanese and English IMO. I think it means flower in Japanese? In anime, I often see that or Sora (which I think means sky). Do Japanese people actually name kids that, or is it just in anime?

This probably doesn't help, but all of the second-generation Japanese friends of mine have basic run-of-the-mill Western names, like "Cindy" or "Brian" or "Jason".

Our children (mixed-race) have Western first names, and Chinese middle names.

Almost everyone here in Taiwan has an "English name" because we whiteys have such issues pronouncing (and let's face it, remembering) their Chinese names.

These names are almost invariably the most white-bread, Anglo-protestant names around. I'm currently sitting in a class teaching Melody, Eva, Grace, Tiffany, Jenny, James, Alex, and Armani.

I had a student who's name was Jessica, but her mom decided she needed a new name so she became Stephanie. I told her there was no point in her mom doing that, because Jessica and Stephanie are exactly the same name.

If you take a little girl named Jessica and change her name to Stephanie, that kid is going to live exactly the same life. However, if you took Jessica and renamed her Raquel, that girl lives a completely different life.

We were in China last summer and found that most everyone who deals with westerners has some made-up western name. We spent a lot of time with Jessie; I have no idea what her Chinese name is and she said she dreamed up her western name.

The one thing I would recommend is if you are going to give a child a western, or even a name of foreign origins, make sure you can pronounce it. My brother-in-law in China named their daughter "Amy" in anticipation of one day coming to North America. Unfortunately none of them can say it correctly and everyone pronounces it like "ah-me" rather than "ay-me". Similarly if you pick a Japanese name, make sure you/your spouse can pronounce it properly.

I was talking to an Indian guy, on the phone while in Canada, and noticed the same.

A friend of mine had the same dilemna about a year ago.
He's probably in Japan for the long run, but wanted a name that worked for both languages.
They ended up using Kenryu, which can be Ken for short and they can still use kanji for his name.

Yen Man, I did not know this myself but after asking a few people over here: yes, the names used for characters in Anime (in some cases) are fairly common as actual names.

Until we know if it is a girl or a boy I am trying not to think too much about names, but you brought up a very good point.
