The fact that his dad is a cop (and has been one for 33 years) was one of the very first things mentioned by the Chief of Police, so I guess he thought it was part of the story too.

Perhaps the police released that information, as a matter of transparency? People will be dillholes regardless, but probably more so if they can scream police coverup, because the information comes out after the fact...

Maybe because it was brought up by the public, and if he doesn't you know people will scream "cover up" ie: The Ditch

Like it or not, fair and sensitive or not, if people want to read or hear it, it is newsworthy.
How would you feel if it was Nenshi's kid or PM Harper's kid? Newsworthy?

Feel for the families and for the suspects dad. What a horrible thing to live through.
Also why does Global block his face out in one clip but show it in the next clip?
They've went from showing it to blocking it to now showing his face again.

thats just it, newsworthy...I don't think anyone is worried about a cover up or blaming the murders on his fathers career choice.
The fact that his father is in a position of authority in this very community and that he was raised by someone in the law enforcement profession is newsworthy.

I don't think anyone cares what "The Ditch" has to say, and I doubt anybody with any sense at all thinks this is going to be covered up like it's a traffic ticket, or that this crime sheds any negative light on the police service.
The fact that his dad is a cop is interesting to people. If he was a faceless accountant, cab driver, or worked in a light industrial factory, we might not hear or care. He doesn't though -- he's a cop. If his dad was some oilpatch bigshot, we'd probably hear that too.

Would it be news worthy is his dad worked at the kitchen knife department at The Bay?
Nenshi and Harper are the extreme, and not the same situation, IMO

Victims are really close to my age, and I knew several people out partying for BSD (no facebooks or anything today from a good number of them yet). Definitely some worrying going on from my end..
If this guy wasn't on some kind of substance at the time, I don't know how he could go around to 5 people and stab them repeatedly, you'd have to be in a fit of rage or suffering from some kind of mental illness. But to me it doesn't sound like someone had just ticked him off at the party, it sounds like he had thought about it before going in. I just don't know how somebody does that, then again another several times..

The occupation of the parent of the perpetrator of this crime has as much bearing as the occupation of the parent of the victim of this crime, which is none.

Do you really need to beat this point to death? It's newsworthy whether you like it or not. Does this need to turn into a debate about this particular point?

As shocking and sad as it is, I think it's totally conceivable. Unfortunately, mass murders happen fairly frequently. My guess is that there was some type of mental health issue here. If a guy as bat #### crazy as Vincent Li can sell his computer to buy a knife which was suitable for cutting off the head of a random stranger; then this act seems less strange.

The age of the victims shouldn't be public or news either since it doesn't matter if they're 12 or 87 does it?
News is what people want to hear. People want to know if the father of the suspect is a cop. They probably don't want to know if he's a clerk at Sobeys. I agree that it's irrelevant but lots of pieces of news information is irrelevant.

What if the dad was a pimp and his mom was a hooker? Or if they had gang affiliations? Does it become relavent then? What's the line?
I agree that the father doesn't deserve to deal with the inevitable heat he will get, but it's what is going to happen when a family member kills some people.

I usually find people that are constantly talking about respect and disrespect are unbalanced a-holes. They use being disrespected (for very minor things) as a perfectly valid reason for starting a fight.
I disagree that this is a new or growing phenomenon though.

I actually, don't think it does matter.
It appears we have a different view of new and news worthy. I am disgusted by the amount of times the media pulls uninvolved/fringe individuals into matters.
I will leave it at that.

So you're saying over diagnosis of mental illness was an issue in this case here. Care to think that one through again and get back to me?
