To be fair, on average only 3 oilers show up for their games too.

I just watched his press conference. The written/read statement was painful, but during questioning, he's clearly a guy with a big heart and I wish him all the best. I feel kind of bad pointing out his shortfalls.

And I mean kind of, not actually. He's an Oiler after all.

Actually that's being a tad generous on most nights.

Smyth is a class and quality person and has (was) been a very good NHL player for a long time.

Absolutely embarrassing and disrespectful that 3 current players were at his retirement presser.

Speaks volumes of the putrid Oiler culture and why they are no good.

Jarrett Stoll is dead on with his twitter comment.

All the best in retirement for the hockey player who looks he evolved from Glass Joe in Mike Tyson's Punchout.

I'm not defending those entitled brats on the roster, but if only 3 showed up, could that speak to Ryan Smyth's character and not to the other 19?

I met Smyth once a few years ago, and even after explaining I was a Flames fan he took a few minutes and chatted with me about hockey. He's a class act and an inspiration to all those kids who don't have the elite skills or are the best skaters. He's proof that if you want something bad enough there's a chance it will happen.

The Oilers are no good, but I'll miss watching Smyth irritate the hell out of me.

Yes, it definitely could.

But let's look at the evidence that is available to us...

Ryan Smyth: heart and soul type that answers the call for TC every time.

The kids: don't really know, but seem to be pretty entitled. Lot's of talk about serious dressing room problems and the kids running the show

No proof either way, but I know where my opinion falls

This whole ordeal up in edmonton got me thinking. Has a player ever had a retirement press conference before playing his last game? (coming out of retirement not included)

It just strikes me as odd that they do this now when it really should have been done after the season.

Default Ryan Smyth will retire after this season. 2pm press conference

Is it a home game?

Trying to avoid jersey tosses and embarrassing chants?

Gretzky did for one. Or at least he announced his retirement before his last game. Although I can't recall if there was a press conference prior to his final game.

Nope he did actually, had a press conference on the 16 announcing his retirement, and then played his last game against Pittsburgh the following night.

I think it was just to distract the masses from the pathetic 3-0 home shutout.

Anyone go to retirement functions at work even when you may not know the person well or even like the person?

Exactly.

It is the right thing to do when someone is moving to their next stage and it is a show of respect.

I can only guess that there is no respect amongst the greasers.

And even although it is the wrong thread, it has to again be noted that the oilers are no good.
