There's always gonna be doubters. NCAA might be error filled but it's harder to put up offense than it is in the CHL as the competition is older and stronger, and Johnny just put up the best production in the league since the Kariya days, and is posting an NHLE similar to Crosby before cracking the NIL. But if that doesn't count for anything still, then simply sitting down and watching this kid for yourself should say enough about his elite level abilities. He's not just getting by because the competition is at a lower standard. We're talking almost 20 years since someone has produced at the click he is.

I can understand tempered expectations for the kid but, I am happy that he signed with the Flames. He could have returned to school, waited out a year and signed to another team with zero compensation to the Flames. I look at the signing as a positive that the organization is moving in the right direction; hopefully, JG's willingness to sign here will translate to quality UFAs, etc.

Excited to see Gaudreau play tomorrow, but I'm honestly hoping he doesn't score for his own sake. Don't want another Baertschi scenario with expectations getting even further out of hand.

Because dissenting opinions are not that welcomed on Calgarypuck anymore. I have however been on the boards for 11+ years. Look at my post history. I am not a troll nor negative about Flames or this board. I just questioned the hype and excitement for a player I have a different opinion about. Its a chat board. That's what its for. I've also said I hope he overcomes the odds. And I do.

Fair enough.
I just dislike when people use winning the Hobby Baker as a detractor. Especially when many people don't know that Gaudreau is in great company winning it at 20.

A legit, blue-chip prospect who could've potentially signed with any team he wanted in a year. Yeah excuse the excitement for welcoming the kid to the organization. Not one person here has anointed him the next Crosby or that we're automatic cup contenders with him.

I wouldn't say that winning the Hobey Baker is a detractor - however by posting the list I wanted to show that it is not an indicator of future NHL success, let alone NHL career.
