E-mailed a friend of mine who lives just outside of Hamburg and is a Flames fan. He had nothing positive to say about David Wolf. Called him a cheap shot artist with no hockey sense.

Honestly, I have very little interest in seeing this guy become a Calgary Flame.
If he can learn the ways of McGrattan and samurai his malicious intent, then sure, I'd be all for him coming in. The guy is no slouch when it comes to actually playing hockey, but he's going to have to temper his...well, temper.
We have another kid like that in the system already, Kanzig. He's going to have to learn to control his hulk smash side too.
Do we really need another guy like this? I would rather save that contract spot for someone else at this point. Develop within. Aren't guess like this easy to find?

Are we short on contract spots (honest question)? I feel like this gets brought up a lot, but isn't a real issue with the Flames at this point. Who are we saving these spots for?

It is marginally better than giving up 5th and 6th rounders for guys like PL3 and MacDermid who maybe play a handful of games a season.
As for contract spots, only worthwhile saving them for transactions where you receive more players than you give up or for prospect signings near the end of the season.

You think guys that are top 2 on their team in scoring and are the toughest guy on the ice are easy to find? Even if it is the German league, that is very uncommon.
Also how many guys like that do we actually have under contract for next year? McGrattan? Ferland? I don't think Van Brabant fits in that group. So it's not exactly something the Flames have in spades.

Couldn't hurt to give him a try for a year. Maybe he's already the player we can only hope Ferland turns into.
So David Wolf got a 7 game suspension in the DEL playoffs for basically breaking a guy's face.
Not sure that other guy was looking to fight, he dropped his arms to his side, but didn't shake the gloves off.
Shouldn't have come at him like he wanted to fight then. It looked exactly like he was going to drop them...then didn't. It's like turtling without the brains to cover up.
I assume the idea is that he can potentially be more than just a fighter. I doubt Burke is signing guys from Germany just to fight.
One would hope. I mean he is the second highest scorer on his team (23rd in the league) so I would assume he has at least some actual hockey skill. That being said as the second highest scorer I would assume that he probably get's PP minutes & significant TOI over there that he won't get over here on top of the lower quality of competition. I wouldn't make a bet on him being anything above a 4th line guy.
Still, I like moves like this. I'd rather take a small gamble and bring over a youngish European star player who might have some extra upside then burn a reserve list slot on a career AHL'er type. Worst case is that he can't hack it in the NHL and he get's assigned to the Heat (or loaned back to the DEL).
We were having a discussion as to the fight that Wolf had in the playoffs before his suspension. Some are for him coming to the Flames, some don't want him anywhere near the team.

hallo community,
it's funny to read about your opinions about David Wolf being good or not for your team. First of all, it's a pitty that he probably doesn't stay with us. In other words: you just can win!
To make one thing clear: about the last fighting (and yes: he can fight!) I'm a little twofaced. On the one hand it was useless to fight in this situation, 5 minutes before the game ended and being 2 goals behind. This action shortened the chance to reach the overtime and Hamburg Freezers lost the game. On the other hand the opponent team played a very tough and partly unfair series and provoked such fights almost every minute. David Wolf is a well known guy in the "Deutsche Eishockey league" and if someone is wanting to dance with him he's getting his lessons.
But at the end I'm happy about the fight. Not because this poor Mr. Schopper lost some teeth but because the whole story was all exaggerated: it weren't 6 teeth, it was a denture that broke off. The next game Schopper was playing again giggling. So maybe David didn'd hit him hard enogh.
If David is really leaving the Hamburg Freezers to take the chance to play some NHL you can be happy about him. He knows how to electrify his team, he can play Icehockey and additionally he can do the "tooth fairy"
But with all enthusiasm about David - don't forget icehockey is a team sport. He's just that good his row and his team is playing. He won't be Chuck Norris one-man-army winning a game alone.
(I hope my english is good enough)
assuming "us" in the first sentence means he's a Freezers fan.

Seems like a cheap ####### who likes to punch people who havent even engaged or got their gloves off. Canucks can have him. Probably doesnt have the skill to make the NHL and would be rocked by Westgarth or Big Ern. Either way - do not want

Oh come on, you've never had someone at hockey calling you a ##### to your face or spearing/crosschecking and just standing there unwilling to engage? I have, and I've dropped my gloves and socked them in the mouth while they stood their with their gloves on.
