Gillies Staying in Providence for 3rd Year

Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson 5m#Flames prospect Jon Gillies is returning to Providence for his junior season. Best move for 20-year-old goalie. He'll be go-to guy there.

Oh come on, now he's going to go all free agent thing and I'm sure that Sather is whispering in his ear and his mom and dad probably hate calgary too.
 Doomed we are doomed.

And something about nobody just walks into Mordor

But its a good move, no need to rush him.

Patience with goalie prospects is the only way to go, no matter how good they are. I know he was a 6th round pick, but Joni Ortio is a great example of letting someone's game mature in a lesser league, even though his league was a step up from the NCAA, it still applies.

Still, even Ortio was in the NHL much earlier than anyone could have expected.

I was expecting and hoping for this. I didn't think Gilles is ready for the NHL yet and I definitely think there will be an advantage to have Gilles playing another year in Providence. The more he plays in Providence the better. In Abby or Flames he might not have that luxury. Even playing in Alaska won't guarantee him with much playing time.

I don't think this season was as impressive as last season - I think he suffered an injury somewhere along the way and didn't look as dominating as he did last year. Another year in college hockey is probably the best move for him. Go down and dominate for another year, win next year's Hobey, then join the Heat for their likely long playoff run next year.

He's been the go to guy for 2 years now!

Still, agree with other posters. Goalies need lots of time to develop! This is a good choice by Gillies. Wish him the best!

			Best move for everyone.
My hope is that the goaltending works out with Ramo/some guy with the Flames, Ortio/some guy with the Heat. Both Ramo/Ortio can carry the load where they play and Ortio can continue his development.

			Good.
No rush, especially for a goalie. He's come along way since draft day but another full year of being the guy, working on consistency will be good.

Nate Leaman is putting together a good program there in Providence.

Good. Gillies is too small and needs another year in the NCAA to bulk up. Plus, I'm sure his mom wants him to stay in school as well.
 Wait, what?

This probably means we will qualify Roy then.
The Flames currently only have one goalie under contract for next year in Ramo.

Ortio and Roy are both RFA's.
