I don't think they'll get what they need to trade it, the prospects are no sure things but they need a top two centre and a top two dman... Almost nobody trades those types of players while they are still young. Best chance of filling that need is in the draft, especially one where the top four picks are all dmen and centres.

On draft day, the only thing I want to see is Ekblad going to any other team than the Oilers. I couldn't care who else they pick up, I just want to see MacT and co. squirm because their perfect Dman was just seen putting on another team's sweater.

If somehow we get the third pick, I could see us getting Ekblad. Buffalo should pick a forward and the Oil pick Draisaitl. SCH also said that the Oilers are interested in Draisaitl.

It doesn't matter, they'll just ruin him too with saviour talk and throwing him in over his head. It's kinda fun to watch their hope build and be crushed year after year after year
... after year.

Since it looks like we'll be picking 5-6 I want Ehlers. Just seeing his hilights and reading reviews on him. Sounds too good to pass up. As posted some sites have him top 4.
Not to mention seeing how impressive some smaller have been. He's actually not that small. Some sites have him listed 6 feet but ton of skill. Also Kane, Duchene, Oilers midgets, etc. There are few smaller players in the top 6, just need the core strength. Kings and Blues are probably the biggest truculence teams.
Ehlers-Monahan-Colborne would be something else.
Ehlers it is for me.

To me, if you can get another 6'2" centre with elite offenisve upside... No brainer to me. Him and Monahan down the middle would complement each other perfectly, a good two way guy and an elite passer/playmaker. Could be set at pivot for a decade. Wingers are the last piece you add and the easiest to acquire which is why he should be picked before dal colle or ritchie.
|
Who are these elite wingers? Descheneau who was passed over in the draft?
The Ice are a somewhat mediocre team, and Reinhart makes the players he plays with so much better. I rank him much higher than Draisaitl - and I wouldn't mind if the Flames draft Draisaitl at all (and I rank Draisaitl at around 4th or so and hope the Flames draft him). I think Reinhart is simply the best forward available this draft.

sooo ... if you're Aaron Ekblad and know you're probably Edmonton bound, do you pull a Lindros/Berard? I know I would.

he kind of already is, last game the Oilers brass went to see Ekblad play he was -6
but perhaps being -6 may make the Oilers think he would fit right in with the rest of the team

Seeing the Oilers as they are now, I could not blame anyone for saying no.
They have nearly destroyed 4 top tier players in Eberle, Yakupov, RNH and Hall. Really, what's going to change between now and the fall.

I've wondered the same about Ekblad. I think it would be perfect if he came out and said he would publicly not play for the oilers and then we draft him somehow. We would get a good young player that would hate the oilers and they'd hate him too!

One would like to think and hope that the hockey gods would reward the Flames sometime. Hoping this draft is that time they are rewarded.

Good point. But after the performance this year with all the injuries and call ups, they have made teams in the NHL take notice. Last years draft was good too. Teams should be penalized for tanking the season away like Florida and NYI on a consistent basis. Edmonton...well, they are just a poorly run organization that won't ever change.

I think it's a pipe dream to think Flames will end up with a top 2 pick in next years draft.

I agree... McDavid or Eichel would be fantastic, but the potential consolation prizes are quite nice too! Hanifin, Barzal, Konecy...

... Strome, Kylington, Zacha ... looks like a really stacked draft class from today's point of view. If it lives up to the hype, Flames will add a real quality prospect in any case.

We won't get those either. Our franchise basement is 6th overall. It is written.
