This will end when the Oligarchs and other rich Russians start losing all their money. Then its game over, so whoever can figure out the quickest way to make them shed money will solve this thing quickly. Money always talks and when Putin is getting calls from his buddies telling him to end this thing because they're going broke, it will end. Unless he's truly gone full ###### here.

You think hes doing this without their express approval and consent? Those guys are probably in the back room smoking cigars and chugging vodka together.

Well they approve as long as they aren't shedding money. Once they start going broke they will be forced to stop this. I mean maybe they love Russia, but enough to lose hundreds of billions of dollars? I very much doubt it. So long as nothing happens to them economically this will go on until someone does use force.

Hard to say since he locked up one of them for opposing him

It's not just Ukraine. It's EUROPE that depends on Russian gas. Ukraine pipelines just so happen to be the main delivery method for that gas.

Western Russian Gas Supplies delivered to Europe via Ukraine

I first viewed both of these maps in this report - pages 10 & 11. Its a solid read overall though.

Not necessarily. Maybe his actions not have cost them anything, so they don't care... yet.

Maybe they have already decided to get rid of Putin, but will wait until the time is right.

For all we know, Putin caught wind of an impending coup and decided to invade something to make himself a "war president"

Unless I'm missing something, I don't get all the rage over this. It is pretty obvious that the people of Crimea wanted to join Russia. It's a very small area, so what's the big deal?

If you think Russia (or any country) invading another sovereign nation isn't a big deal then I guess you have not learned anything from history.

To be fair, I think he actually is wondering what's wrong with a predominantly Russian population joining back up with Russia. Russia wants them, they want Russia to want them... I see where he's coming from with his question.

I think he isn't understanding the implication of illegal annexation, however; not a problem, not everyone knows about this stuff as much as others.

What kind of Ukrainian assets are in Crimea and can they afford to sacrifice them to get the military personnel out?

The Ukrainian forces should not engage Russian soldiers in Crimea. They need to withdraw and defend mainland Ukraine from invasion. If a shooting war starts in Crimea, Russia will have justification to invade the mainland.

I guess it would be nearly impossible to get these guys out anyway. Russia controls the land and sea ports, so no ships or aircraft out. Driving out is probably not going to work either, so I guess they are hooped.

Don't forget, a lot of those Ukrainian soldiers stuck in Crimea also have family there. Even if they could withdraw, they'd be leaving their loved ones behind. I just can't see that happening.

A referendum under occupation with no option to keep the status quo is hardly a fair and unbiased referendum. They should have let emotions calm down, withdraw occupying forces and allow a proper referendum to take place.

Yeah that was never going to happen, these ballots were probably printed long before the Russians invaded
