The signing makes perfect sense given what they gave up for him (that made no sense). It seems more and more teams believe in their ability to develop goaltenders.

I think that even if Berra turns into a star it will only be because of his new situation in Colorado and the opportunities afforded him. Just don't see him getting the type of high quality development he needs in Calgary for him to turn the corner so it's really a no regret situation in trading him.

I wonder how easy the contract negotiations were for Berras agent after it became public knowledge that the Avalanche were the ones that wanted him. It must of been pretty easy for his agent to start high in the negotiations.

That seems like quite a bit to pay an almost completely unproven player. Good for him - seemed like a great guy.

Obviously the Avs see something in him that hasn't translated to on ice success (yet) in the NHL. Fantastic job by Berra's agent to get him a bump from 850K to 1.45 x 3 in the deal with the numbers he's put up in the NHL.
Colorado is sitting pretty with 25+ million in cap space and 18 players, including Berra, under contract heading into next season. Kudos to Sakic and Roy.

Sakic may have had some input, but Roy inherited all of those contracts

The kudos for Roy are more about how he has taken the 29th placed team last season to where they are today, sitting in 6th spot overall. He took over a team that had some quality pieces to build around but let's not dismiss the fact his team has been over-achievers in the eyes of many. He is a strong contender in the Jack Adams discussion.

Oh I fully agree that he has done a great job as coach, but your comment was praising their contract situation

They've got a bunch of space but also have to sign ROR, Statsny is a UFA so they'll either have to pay him or a replacement.

Goalies are probably the hardest guys to predict. I fail to see how anyone can make that prediction for a guy like Berra who hasn't proved zilch.

I'm legitimately happy for Berra. The guy comes over from Europe to a foreign country and has to learn the culture and ways of the NHL. Then gets traded from the club that drafted him and has to start from the bottom here in Calgary. Works his way up, gets traded and is now a millionaire. Seriously, good for him. One of the true good guys on this team and I wish him all the best.
