Berra has no glove and is mentally soft. One of those is a solvable problem with coaching.

I'll be shocked if he's in the NHL at the conclusion of this contract.

I say that as a fan who likes him. Best of luck Reto! Prove me wrong Bud!

I'll wait to see how much $ his contract is. If it's near league minimum then 3 years is no big deal. If they are paying over a million a year then I would laugh.

Great potential, serious problems.

I don't doubt the Flames had concerns about him, but I am wondering if you have a source or article speaking to Malarchuk's concerns?

Wasn't meant to be a direct quote, I'm simply saying I don't think Allaire sees anything different than Malarchuk. Malarchuk has said he's got the tools to be a top end goaltender but has a few issues to work out. If you're Allaire and you have Roy's ear, that's the kind of tender you want to back up Varlamov.

We've all seen him play, those issues are pretty obvious if you do the eye test.

This doesn't make a ton of sense. Varlamov is still their starter for the forseeable future. So one can only assume that they're unhappy with Giguere -- but what makes them think Berra is going to outplay him? Or is it just Giguere's age...

He's all but officially signed his retirement papers.

I heard on the FAN that Giguere is thinking or retirement, and they even mentions a soundbite or quote from Roy saying Giguere might get the start in Montreal (he is from there IIRC). He is 37 yrs old.

Best of luck to Reto, I hope he finds his rhythm and gets 20+ games a year. He'll be learning from the best.

I think about 1.2 is where I'd cut it off for Berra. He's got all the core strengths to be an unorthodox above average backup goaltender (should Allaire work out some of his more problematic tendencies) while retaining a high ceiling, albeit one he'll likely never reach unless he starts his life over.

Berra is an interesting player and if Sherman/Roy/Allaire see something in him, I'll be interest to find out if he achieves whatever they see in him. Berra's a likeable guy and it's hard to not cheer for him to succeed in the NHL. If he can back up Varlamov until Pickard works his way up, that's a win for both teams.

If that's what he wanted, boy am I ever glad we traded him. I wouldn't sign him for 3 yrs. We capitalized on an asset that I feel would have disappeared.

Really is a case of the right kind of coaching for the right kind of player. I said it before, Its a great scenario for all involved. A Roy/Allaire combo tutoring Berra will help Berra out exponentially. I really do believe this is a great investment on the avs part. All Berra needed to do was settle down his movements and he would be fine. And he was just starting to do that before he was traded. Avs bought in at the right time IMO.

I don't see Berra as anything more than a backup to Varlamov for the next few years but it's still a good deal for the Avs. They get a cheap backup with some potential and in the worst case his contract won't count against the cap if sent to the minors.

The CBA has changed. They only save ~$925k by sending him to the minors (assuming his salary is higher than that).

I was assuming his salary would be lower than that or at the very highest ~1M. It's a bad deal for the Lanche if they paid anymore than that.

Roy must see something in him , likely a project piece. Good for him though seems like a good guy.
