Here's a good story on Johnny's quest for the Hobey Baker, and how he has basically ran away from the competition, with an historically strong season: http://www.uscho.com/hobeywatch/2014...-for-gaudreau/

Development camp in July.
Gaudreau was by a fair margin the best player out there then. Monahan was good at the camp, Gaudreau was great.
If Gaudreau was 6 feet, he'd already be a star in this league.

Development camp doesn't have much to do with making the Flames.
I assumed that TJ was talking about how Monahan played well enough at TC to make the Flames and that Gaudreau would have to do the same.
Better to awesome at the development camp than not but it isn't going to determine whether a guy makes the team or not.

TjRhythmic was talking about main camp. jg13 then said he (Gaudreau) was better at camp then Monahan, which can only mean rookie camp since that's where they were both together. It was trying to find a comparable.
I actually don't think Monahan blew anyone away at camp, Poirier was just as good as him. Monahan got better on day two then he was on day one, better on day three then he was on day two etc etc. That's how he stuck.

Yeah sorry meant in Development camp where you had a clear shot of him impressing more than Monahan.

I really hope they start hosting development camps at the Dome. It's near criminal the amount of seats that are available to watch the kids play. Also the viewing angle inhibits the amount, and quality of footage people are able to get.
Most of us that can't attend are stuck with a behind the net shot of amateur vids, or limited Flames TV clips, and don't really get the full showcase of all the prospects.

Not to derail the thread, but it would be interesting to hear from Monahan how much of an impact living with Hudler had on his NHL game. Boost to his confidence? Was Hudler always pumping his tires when he did stuff right and letting him down easy with things he did wrong?
Might be a great approach for our other young stars in this league that are coming in on a perceived handicap (for Monahan the question was his age, for Gaudreau it will be his size) maybe Hudler is the rookie whisperer? Or is that a stretch? Maybe Monahan was just an anomaly since he seems so cool and collected.

I'm off to pitch this as the next 'NHL Revealed'-type reality series. Thanks in advance for making me some cash
What was that about derailing the thread?

Few blogs I found on BC interruption involving Johnny Hockey if you are bored.
United States of Hockey - The Johnny Gaudreau Question
Quote:
What we don’t know is what Gaudreau is going to do next and the biggest question of them all, one that has followed Gaudreau since he started getting noticed in the USHL, will his game translate to the NHL level?
|
Quote:
The skills required to succeed at the college level can vary. For many of the top players, success comes from age, physical maturity and experience. That’s never been the case for Gaudreau. His success comes from talent, from an unrivaled skill level and hockey sense that has made him near unstoppable.
|
Quote:
It was a surprise that Gaudreau was picked at 104th overall in the 2011 draft because of his size, but it was a calculated risk by the Calgary Flames’ brass at the time. They bet on skill knowing that Gaudreau probably wasn’t going to grow much more. It’s a bet that could yet pay off albeit under a new regime in Calgary that puts more weight behind size and truculence than the previous one.
|
Not the greatest writing and a lot of stuff we already know, but always interesting to see things from an outsiders perspective. This is however where he lost any possible credibility:
Quote:
That said, Calgary has a pretty clear path to the NHL at this point with a rather weak prospects system
|
Riiiight... so there are about 20 teams in the NHL with a 'horrible' prospect system by comparison? Here is the link anyway..
http://unitedstatesofhockey.com/2014...reau-question/
Some historical perspective in the Hobey case for Gaudreau
Quote:
That Gaudreau is the Hobey front-runner by a country mile is hardly a surprise. The New Jersey native is leading the nation in scoring average for the second consecutive season, and doing so by a wide margin, as his 64 points (30g, 34a) in 34 games give him 1.88 points per game, almost a third of a point ahead of his closest competitor, Greg Carey of St. Lawrence. I’ve made an effort to find different topics each week to avoid turning this blog into the Gaudreau Show, but it’s time to focus on the high-flying Eagles forward and put his performance this season into context.

He was pretty up front with it on the FAN today. Although he has nothing but positives to day about the boy. In fact, he said something along the lines of the sooner he is gone the better, he is sick of seeing JG rip up BU.

If the timing works that Gaudreau can only play for the Flames one game this season I'd rather he didn't play at all, sign his contract but then also sign a PTO with the Heat to finish the season and playoffs for them.

Can you do both?
Can you sign to the Flames and then sign an AHL PTO?

I don't know.
If they can't then sign him to a PTO to finish the season in Abby then his pro deal after. I'd hate to waste a year of his ELC to play in one game.

I think it is a sort term pain for long term gain.
A "we are willing to burn a year for you because we value you so much" approach.
Right or wrong, I have no idea.

Doubt it. He could sign an ATO to play with the Heat and then be signed by the Flames once the Heat season ends but assuming his agent isn't crazy he wouldn't do that (injury risk, end of college eligibility, etc).

Yes you can.
Signing with the Flames would be effective July 1st, then sign an ATO for the remainder of this season
But he could not sign and play with the Flames and then sign an ATO.

BC out early? Gaudreau signs ELC with Flames, plays in NHL, then gets re-assigned to AHL for playoffs. Clock is running on his contract beginning with 13-14.
BC out later? Gaudreau signs ELC with Flames, signs ATO with Heat for playoffs. Clock on contract starts running with 14-15 season.
