The penalty may have been harsh but the Devils broke the rules. Going back on the original ruling is extremely sketchy IMO and does reek of behind the scenes shenanigans. This is the kind of bush league stuff I would expect from the CFL but not the NHL.

I think it will be the same percentages as before. If the devils win the lottery, no one will move.

some people expected this for quite some time ... like the former TBL owner in July, and Ken Daneyko agreed. Probably not that big of a surprise to some "in the know" ...

Garbage, what would have happened if the Devils had forfeited the pick before this year? Something reeks in this and it smells like catering to a new ownership group.

Meh, it's the 30th pick no matter where they finish. I bet the biggest sigh of relief if the 1.5 million they don't have to pay.
If Kovalchuk didn't bail I'd be a little upset at if they rescinded the penalty. But he bailed, therefore the minimalization of the penalty should respond accordingly.
Just my 2 cents, but I get way others would be suspicious. But to be truly upset is a little odd, has little to no outcome on the Flames.

You have to think that if this was a Canadian team, there's no way there would be a penalty reduction.

The Devils broke the rules, the fact Kovy bailed is completely irrelevant.

You don't have to think that way at all. You can choose to believe that if you want, but in no way are you forced to.

I believe in the Jays.

What a crock!
It seemed dumb to keep the #29 pick rather then opt to forfeit it... now we know why Lou must have had a backroom nudge-nudge-wink-wink deal with Bettman the entire time! Why give up a pick at all when you know the NHL is just going to give you one at the end.
I hope someone raises a giant stink over this. What bull####!

This was a favour done to the Devils, a team that was in dire financial trouble. There is no arguing this.
No favours would be done for Canadian teams.

Quote:
The New Jersey Devils will now be entitled to the 30th selection overall in the 2014 NHL Draft (the last pick in the first round), regardless of the Devils' final standing following the 2013/14 season.
The Club will not be permitted to trade or transfer its right to the 30th overall selection in the 2014 NHL Draft.
The Club's fine has been partially reduced.
The League intends to have no further comment on this matter.

Forfeit Pick @TStivali 3m
The Devils got more from the league today than the Islanders got for Vanek

They were likely told not to forfeit the pick.
and lol at "The league intends to have no further comment on this matter". Accountability doesn't work like that Gary.

The league should have nullified the trade at the outset rather than let the NJD file it and then punish them.

Seems like there were a lot of contracts that pushed the limits, but wasn't Kovalchuk's most egregious? Had to draw the line somewhere?
