Gillis has botched this situation totally. When you look at Markstrom, Mathias, Horvat and told Canucks fans a year ago that is what they would get for both Lu and Schneider they would have balked.

If the Sedins come back and prove they're 1st liners again and the rest of the team proves it can score at a competent level then you worry about goaltending. Until then though, it's a secondary concern to the team's bigger problems. If the Sedins aren't better than they've shown this year then it will likely be a full rebuild rather than a retool. If they are still 70+ point guys who just had off years and Lack doesn't provide starter caliber goaltending then you find someone else. 7 of the top 10 goalies in terms of sv% this year have been traded or signed as UFAs in the last few years, so it's not like it's impossible to get competent goaltending if you're willing to pay the price.
And it hasn't been 2 bad months; it has been 1 good month. Outside of December they have an 18-24-8 record. For all their faults, I'm glad management has a reasonable idea of what the team is likely capable of this year rather than thinking they can paper over the team's holes.

Signing the Sedins in November.
Let's not argue the semantics of contender here - I meant playing to make the playoffs and contend (as opposed to retooling/rebuilding), not 'one of the top teams' contender.

I think the decision to move Luongo was under similar duress, namely, "trade me right tucking now."

Was there evidence/discussion of this, or an opinion? (not trying to be a jerk - just asking and genuinely curious)
Because I agree that it wasn't a good hockey decision, but I always just assumed it was a function of not being able to move Luongo and eventually panicking, not any significant off-ice event that forced a Schneider trade.

How many Florida Panthers has Gillis brought in since he became GM? Has to be more than 10 now at least. No wonder that franchise has gone downhill. He should have really taken a look at what happened when the Flames tried pinching their talent.

Mind sharing some proof or even a little evidence? Nothing pointed to that at the time.

I believe it's rule #4 in the agents guide to thinking like a NHL GM.
When unsure of what player to trade consider the following:
Is the player a ginger? If so trade that player.

As someone who works closely around these athletes, I can tell you there's weight in these words. Saying anything more would be libellous.

Actually, there's nothing libellous at all in telling the truth.

I think there is an exception for Vancouver because it always rains, otherwise they'd burn to a crisp.
That's probably why the Sedins are still there.

Their team handled the whole situation in such an embarrassing fasion Canucks fans are grasping at straws to find so way to defend it. People here did the same thing with some of Feaster's disastrous moves but at some point you just have to sit back and realize...they ####ed up.

True, but I doubt very much that his speculation is anywhere close to the truth, so he's wise not to share.
The Schneider trade was Gillis attempting to get out from a disaster of his own making. He overpriced Luongo to be completely untradeable, but knew that he had to resolve the 14-month soap opera he had created. When he got an offer of a first rounder for Schneider, he jumped. Problem is, what he did was little different than cheating on one's wife, then dumping the girlfriend and trying to make up. It doesn't work.
Adding to Gillis' problems was the fact that Eddie Lack played better than I suspect most thought he would. Lack was supposed to be the backup, but he was threatening to steal the starter's job. Throw in a decidedly myopic coach and a team that is consistently losing through no fault of his goaltenders, and Gillis was screwed again.
The Heritage Classic was the end of the line. The fans in Vancouver were not happy with Tortorella's choice. They "Louuuuu'd" when Eddie Lack was introduced as the starting goaltender. Same after each goal - each louder than the last. On the third goal, the loud "We want Lou" chant came up. Tortorella put both goaltenders in untenable positions. My impression of the crowd was that the fans were prepared to run Lack right out of town to support Luongo, and Tortorella seemed intent on pissing him off. As he was eight months ago, Gillis was forced to dump one or the other. And he knew it had to be Luongo. He took what he could get and ran with it. Even though I suspect this is the trade that will result in his being canned the day after the season ends. Tortorella might not be far behind.

Well, one fan here, at least. I haven't ventured into HFboards, but based on some of the vandalism on Wikipedia, I don't think very many Canuck fans are defending Gillis.

I honestly don't think the return is as bad as some are making it out to be. Markstrom struggled on a really bad Panthers team, but he has a boatload of potential and could be a very good goaltender for a long time.
