This seems like people are getting butt hurt on somebody else's behalf. If residents around the universities felt like they were getting screwed by people parking in front of their houses, they could do what inner city communities have done and get the parking authority to set up residential-only parking.

Not really, no.
I mean, all things considered, the spot was empty when I got there around 8-9, and I would leave generally around 3PM depending on the day. Most people work 8 hours shifts, I'm there less than 8 hours, so my chances of upsetting nobody are gold. I also live in a condo, and sometimes I have to walk a whole block from my parking spot to my home. Surprisingly, it has yet to kill me.

What about residents who are retired or have some of thier working days on a weekend? Or those that went shopping and came home at 1:00 with a load of groceries to take in? Clearly you haven't given any of those sinerios a thought.

Sometimes is alot different than the residents who had no choice but to apply to have thier area a permit zone.

No, I haven't given them a sinerios thought.
We can go back and forth all day, but parking in front of your house isn't your right. I try not to be purposely belligerent about it, but I do probably annoy the odd person here or there, so be it.

You're right. I haven't thought about if it's an elderly woman who has an appointment with her hip doctor everyday at the same time and then has to park two houses down and struggle her way up the sidewalk. I also don't entirely care.

This is another one of those things that isn't against any rule out there, but some people don't like it so they raise a stink about decency and respect.

The city owns the streets. If a spot is legal and free I'm going to park there. 8AM, 1PM, 6PM, whatever. If there's a free open spot near somewhere I need to be, I'm parking there. Calgary is a funny place, because it's still got people who think in that small town mentality. It's the big city. Parking is some of the most expensive in the world. Free open spot? Nope. Now it's mine.

As I said before: I must just be a monster.

Maybe people shouldn't buy houses near schools that have students of driving age, if they don't want people parking in front of their houses.

There is a house right across the street from my kids school where the owners put pylons and a home made no parking sign on the street to block people.

When I do drive to the school for some event, I park farther away and not in front of a house.

I agree I can park in front of someones house, but it seems better in my mind to park alongside a green space or something. I don't mind walking a longer ways.

I don't live near the university, but a different part of the inner city and across the street from me is a handicap street parking spot. So if some old lady has a hip problem that is significant enough she can apply to get a reserved parking spot in front of her place. Anyone else it just seems crazy to think you own the spot in front of your house.

Of course you're right. There are no laws, but I remember the last house my wife and I owned, the one neighbour across the street would always park in front of our house, instead of hers. I wanted to kill her.

Speaking of Seniors, can we get some kind of curfew on when they are allowed to shop at grocery stores? It grinds my gears when I stop at Safeway on the way home from work for a couple items and the line up is choked with 5 blue hairs all making lengthy conversation with the cashier. You have all day to get groceries! Plus you are up at 5 in the morning anyways!

This happens in the summertime where we play slo-pitch. I understand where they are coming from as people fill the street from 10am-9pm every sunday but as long as they realize their sign isn't legal thats fine.

My place back onto a church parking lot which is great as there is no one behind us 6 days a week, but on Sundays the limited spots we have are filled by church overflow and its a huge PITA. There are worse things in life to worry about.

I see the parking in front of people houses issue as divided into two categories. People who live in high demand areas, and other residential areas.

If you chose to live near a university, school, or LRT station those are the consequences. You get the benefit of living on land that is close to those amenities at the price of sharing a public resource (on street parking). I agree that if the houses are old and there is legitamately no other parking options than residential restrictions make sense. But if you have 2 spaces in your back alley or worse a garage and 2 spaces then I see no need to accomodate the home owner. They made a choice and probably utilize the benefit. So someone who parks in a premium area in front of someones house in a non residential permit zone should do so without question, the onus is on the members of the comunity who are affected to prove they need accomodation from the city and pay the associated costs with the accomodation.

In non premium areas I think being upset at someone always parking in front of your house is a little more reasonable provided it is because they are wasting there parking areas. In modern communities everyone has at least 2 parking spots. The reason most people park regularly on the street in these areas is that they have filled their garage with crap. So if you park in front of someones house because your garage is filled with crap then you are a jerk despite your legal right to do so.

If you do it because you have guests, you have too many cars that are driven regularly, you are cleaning your garage that day, someone parked in front of your place etc then it is perfectly reasonalbe to park in front of someones house
