Aliens. It's not that it's an awful movie, but I hate that it took the best sci-fi thriller movie ever and made a sequel that's an action movie. It discarded all of the best parts of the original and kept only the most basic, surface-level elements.

Really, I find just about everything James Cameron has directed to be vastly overrated, with the exception of Terminator 2, and possibly Abyss, though even that has a gag-me-with-a-spoon ending that ruins an an otherwise solid film.

Disagree, the masculinity theme is only a portion of the movie. The climax revolves around the credit card buildings being destroyed so yeah, the whole project Mayhem part of the movie is about taking away the power of the rich and bringing down modern society. Yes there is a portion of masculinity and cults but the way the fight club starts isn't about masculinity, it's about therapy through fighting because everyone can do it; fat, skinny, tall or short. The portion about masculinity focuses on how the modern perception of masculinity isn't masculine at all and it's focused on achieving beauty and wealth.

This thread makes me so mad. So many of you are unreasonable and MAKE NO SENSE. Which is also why I deeply love this thread.

- Expandables
- Avatar
- Every Marvel movie except Thor & Iron Man 1
- Anything Joss Whedon is involved in
- Lord of the Rings
- Kick Ass
- Nightmare Before Christmas

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Pretty much any movie that is only popular because of the popularisation of "Nerd Culture".

I find it funny how much people hated Katie Holmes in that movie. She was way better than Maggie Gyllenhaal IMO. Way hotter too.

I don't know the Expandables. Is that a movie about a team of professional vaginal expansionists?

No, it was the one about the team of professionals who go around creating additional franchises in different sports leagues.

I haven't seen this other Expandables, tell me more.

Gyllenhaal makes me cringe because she resembles a pig.

All the latest superhero movies outside of the Batman ones Iron Man (first one only) and the last Spiderman (thought the casting was way better than the Toby McGuire ones). They are all for the most part hot garbage IMO. The Avengers was good but I can't believe it's one of the highest grossing movies of all time as it's not that good.

I get where you're coming from, but I warm-heartedly disagree .

I've always felt that Project Mayhem was, at least in the movie, meant to be a somewhat nonsensical project. Hence the name really. More about causing havoc than actually achieving something. Tyler might believe in it (although it's debatable if Tyler truly cares about the things he talks about). But the Narrator, the real person, does not.

I hated Miracle on Ice. You think being a hockey fan, I'd like it but it had just too much over the top American jingoism. I also hated Rocky and I'm a fight fan too. I guess it would have made a good comic book but that's about it. Speaking of comic books, I quit reading them at about 7 years old but a lot of the movies are now based on them. I don't watch them or very many movies these days.

I liked a lot of the Tarantino movies but I'm not a fan of the extraneous violence and graphic gore that seems to invade movies and most prime time TV shows these days.

Now get off my lawn.
Speaking of that movie, it was just okay as well, though I like Eastwood's westerns.

ET, Star Wars (all), anything modern with vampires in them - hate 'em, hate 'em all.

Tyler was the counterpoint to the narrators existence. His beliefs were supposed to counter the 9-5 materialistic pacifist feminine society. Its not about any one theme, its multiple ideas in one story although I don't think project mayhem was a joke, the purpose was to create mayhem to shake up the system and get everyone involved as seen by the fact that the cops were even in on it.

What I do agree on is the heavy cult aspect portraying the good, the bad and the psychotic sides of an organisation led by a crazy person. The book explains things much better

I have to say Lord of the Rings movies as well. I think people who read the books when they were younger have a soft spot due to nostalgia, but taken alone, those movies are terrible. Stupid story and boring dialogue.

I can't say that I ever watched a Harry Potter movie though.

Two others would be Titanic and Forest Gump. Titanic had some nice cinematography and was a pretty good period piece, but like LotR, the dialogue killed it. Forest Gump was an interesting story, but the main character was so annoying in his mannerisms, that I couldn't get past it.

I don't hate the Game of Thrones show and books, but I think they are only decent at best.

I thought it was OK, but definitely not worthy of all they hype.

Another one I thought of is "Sexy Beast" with Ben Kingsley. I have a few friends that kept telling me how great it was but I thought it was boring. I just didn't get it I guess.

And the Usual Suspects is another one that I thought was just borderline OK. I wouldn't say I hated it, but the way people talk about it, you would think it was amazing or something.

It wouldn't surprise me that a book would have more themes that are given equal treatment, and I did get a feeling from the movie that probably it has more of the stuff you mention. I haven't read the book, I only know some things about it, so there's not that much I can say about it.

However, I feel that in the movie some of these themes are raised above others. But that's about as much as I can say about that without at least watching the movie again

I should probably read the book. Although I'm kind of hesitant, as I'm afraid I'd just be disappointed. Can't really think of a book/movie combo that I really liked.

(Well I kind of did like the LotR movies, but on the same level as I like the books. The merits of the movies are more technical and visual, which is nice but special in the same way.)

So tired of the Marvel universe. Too much!!

I get that they're in the money making business, but a little integrity isn't a bad thing either.

Footloose, which also happens to be the song I hate the most that people seem to like.
