I wish King would just give a no comment instead of all the cryptic bull#### though, even when he's asked direct questions about it. You're right Tyler, waiting until everything is in place is the better approach, I'm just tired of the teases. Hell, even talk about the Saddledome restoration when asked about a new arena if you have to. Just stop with the cryptic remarks.

It's annoying, sure.. but you gotta realize, he's probably being asked about it 99% of the time (rather than initiating the conversation), so he has to provide a remark to the media or to season ticket holders. Describing it as "ambitious" and other superlatives probably helps sell papers and seats.
Let's also not forget, that a HUGE swath of funding for this is probably going to be driven by PSL's and private box sales. Hyping this building and playing to the ego's of Calgary's corporate elite won't hurt!

What does KK even mean by 'ambitious'? Are they building an arena that's the first of its kind in the world or are they just going to build another Consol Energy Center?

They won't announce this until they've finalized details, contracts, agreements, etc.
Compare that to Edmonton and the giant clusterbluck that went on getting that arena off the ground, and you notice a strong organizational differentiation between the two groups
|
That's true, we've just been waiting for so long!
Do you know if they plan to build both a football and hockey stadium? Or is just a new arena for the Flames?
If you could possibly share that much with us haha...

Whatever it is, I'm sure it's a Rock Solid Plan.

That's quite the spin there. I'm excited to see what the Flames have planned as anyone, but the lack of reveal could just as well be caused by incompetence behind the scenes, as much as it could be stealthy professionalism.
As curious as I am to see what the vision is, I wonder if the Flames will have a plan to pay for it by the time it is released. Because let's face it, that is the biggest hurdle...not how big/small it is or where it will be located. If they plan an Oilersque approach to funding, where they stick their head in the sand while everyone keeps telling them no....then get ready to wait for another couple of years before anything happens.

I just invested heavily in KY because I think Edmonton's city council is going to be in dire need of some severe lubing in the very near future.

Isnt that double what they originally said it was going to cost? I mean, I understand cost overruns but that seems ridiculous.

If anyone thinks that that building is going to come in at $605 M they're nuts.
Edmonton will end up owning their own version of Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

So they're spending a boat-load of money and not getting more capacity?

This will be larger than the existing Rexall Place attendance. And for billionth time, adding more nosebleeds to bump up the overall seating capacity does not mean more money. More boxes does.

I thought Rexall was only 16K and change? And, like Tyler said, its primarily about the boxes, but its also about ancillary businesses like concessions, restaurants and I believe they mentioned there will also be a casino?
