If you can't perform live, then just show a music video. Everything else is a big bag of excuses.

RHCP peaked with Mother's Milk, IMO.

They are 50 year old guys who's best music is over 20 years old and I'm sure they know it. Nobody is mistaking them for some cutting edge trail blazers any more. They're allowed to have some fun participating in some gravy gigs. Who cares.

I dont think you people realize how hard it is to set up everything in the couple minutes they have after the whistle. Its not just a matter of plugging the guitar into the amp and calling it a day.
Bands have teams of sound guys that tour with them day in and day out who often have a full day to sound check everything before a big show and if you go to concerts regularly you'll know that they still screw it up... a lot.
No way you're pulling it off for the Super Bowl

Does anyone know on the video Troutman posted from the 2009 Superbowl with Bruce Springsteen, what would be recorded tracks? Are you saying that all of the instruments would be recorded and just the vocals would be live? Really curious about this.

Pre-recorded backing tracks with live vocals.

This.
Its a halftime show and its on the clock. Corners will be cut and wardrobes will malfunction.

Do it real, or don't do it at all. Personally, I'm a fan of not doing it at all.

I get that, but Superbowl halftime is as much an institution as Superbowl commercials. Hell, its a miracle that people realize theres even a game on.

That's the reason I don't like it, I like football. All I want is to do is watch the game.
I'd be annoyed if I went to a concert and halfway through they put down their instruments and started playing football.

Yeah, the Super bowl has got to be about my least enjoyable sports events of the year. About every other weekend of the nfl is usually much more enjoyable.
It's always the same every year. I begrudgingly decide to go to someone's house. I always try to not get there early so I can avoid the endless amount of anthem's the Americans have these days, but I can never manage to get there late enough! Everyone is talking during the game itself, and then telling me to be quiet during the commercials that are trying so hard to be funny.
Yeah, I'm the super bowl grinch. Who wants to party on a Sunday night anyway!

Yeah all the instruments would've been recorded. You can hear some of the cues between songs or between breaks that would allow them to keep timed with the recording. Around the 8:00 mark is a good example where you can hear a faint "1-2-3" before Springsteen goes up to the mic and counts in. I think there's another fainter one around 3:50.
You can also see him looking down a few times (6:30 is a good example) presumably at something that gives him cues when to count in.
