Default Fireside Chat: Rico Fata Interview

Fireside Chat has the pleasure of welcoming Rico Fata, who will be joining us on an upcoming broadcast for our Old Flames segment.

I know this board has pretty polarized views of Rico, but if there is a question you'd like to ask, post a response and we may just ask your question. It could be a question about Rico's career, a question you've wanted to know about the NHL lifestyle, or a question about playing pro hockey in Europe or the NHL.

Does he know about CP's 10+ year obsession with replacing the F word with his last name?

I was wondering why his name would pop up so frequently on here - you learn something new everyday.

I say ask the tough question.

He is seen as the biggest draft bust in Calgary Flames history. Ask why he feels that he was unable to become an impact player at the NHL level.

I know what fans think, but I would love to hear it from the player himself. Does he feel he was rushed? Does he feel he peaked too early? Does he feel he was drafted too high?... etc.

Ask him if he wants the full sized poster of my Avatar, I have it poster sized and it sits on my wall just above the candles on my hope chest.

Dunno if I'd call it the biggest bust in Flames history, but it is high up there. The questions about what he feels happened would be interesting to hear. Maybe the system failed him, we didn't have a very good one back then, never have been really strong at developing.

Fata played at least a game. I would say Jesper Mattson was the biggest bust.

Jasper Mattson was 18th overall.... big difference from 6th overall.

Its between Fata, Tkaczuk, 9th overall Brent Krahn.....

As already mentioned, I would ask him his thoughts on why things never worked out in Calgary.

I'd also like to get his thoughts on his time in Pittsburgh. In 03/04 he scored 16 goals, 34 points in 73 games and looked like he was taking a step in the right direction, but that was really his only decent offensive year. After that he bounced around a bit more until he left the league.

If there was one thing he could have changed or he wishes was different after being drafted by the Flames what is it?

I'd be curious on his impressions of the club during the dark ages before Sutter.

I'd remove Tkaczuk and Krahn from that list since both had their careers ended or seriously derailed by injury.

He played 230 NHL games. That's top 60 from his draft class. So maybe taken too high, but FAR from the worst Flames first rounder.

Yeah, that must be it. It was probably around the time when that hilarious video clip resurfaced. Thanks!
