The bylaw states that the snow must be cleared 24 hours after it falls. I would think you would only be liable if you left it longer than that. I am certainly not a lawyer, but the time of day you shovel the snow shouldn't factor into whether or not you are going to get sued.

I find it really pays to be a good neighbor, and I clear the sidewalk for the houses directly beside mine as well as my own. It greatly reduces the amount of times I need to do it, because if the neighbor manages to get out there first they will also clear mine. It also prevents any of us from having to scrape or chip packed or frozen snow.

I shovel my walk the first time I walk across it. I don't care if it is still snowing, or it is 1am when I am coming home at 1am from a Thursday night nerd-fest or 6am when I am walking out the door to get to work.

The rest of the time, my 4 year old does it.

I think that the small amount of noise it makes for my neighbours is countered by the fact that I typically shovel down 2 houses on one side and 1 house on the other, combined with the fact that they won't need to worry about slipping on the packed snow/ice in front of my place.

I think most others are sleeping at 530 and 11. Maybe not a big deal if you have a small area to shovel.

I'm on a corner - if any my neighbors shovel around the intersection, you could hear "scrape scrape scrape" for 45 - 60 mins. I wouldn't play my guitar at those times.

The neighbour across the street from me has had a giant bag of soil (the huge tote bags) of soil on their lawn for the past three years. I am assuming they bought it to top dress their lawn or fill gardens or what ever but they have never gotten around to spreading it. So it sits in the ugly a$$ bag on their front lawn.

I was thinking of posting it on Kijiji in the spring " Free Soil, bring your shovel and help yourself"

Can't speak for normal snowfall, but when it gets heavy I will shovel while it is still snowing before it gets too heavy.

I would rather shovel twice but less snow than the big pile after the weather moves on.

Definitely. A few minutes twice or 3 times a day with light snow is much better than half an hour once a day of heavy snow. Sure you go out more but ends up being faster in the end

Get rid of the utensil organizer, and you can fill the DW however you want, then take it out and dump the whole thing in the drawer when it's clean.

I don't see how it could be faster. You are covering the same ground 2-3 x. Extra snow doesn't make the job that much longer. It won't be light snow every time you go out.

I also forgive anyone for not shovelling tonight when is is under -20 C. It can wait until tomorrow.

Imagine oatmeal. You could clean two or even three freshly dirtied bowls and spoons in the same amount of time as if you had tried to clean one bowl that had been left for a few hours. That's how snow works.

On a larger snowfall, like the ones we saw in December, it makes things a ton easier. Plus you can throw the snow further into the yard to prevent a wall of snow from forming right at the edge of your walk.

If it was like it was yesterday, once is enough.

Im surprised troutman is on the other end of this argument, normally he takes the logical side to arguments here.

Shoveling twice while its light enough to push around is miles easier and quicker than 1 heavy load that has to be thrown every couple feet.

Put me in the "shovel more often in really heavy snowfall" camp.

Although I'm also in the "shovel whenever I need to" camp. Working 12 hours shifts, it's before or after work, so prior to 7am on a weekend, or after 9pm on a weeknight is entirely likely. Not everyone has a 9-5, and I'm not going to drive over a foot of snow before I shovel.

However I have no idea how people find a shovel that noise-intrusive. Lawn mowers, snow blowers, fine, but I can barely hear my own driveway being shovelled (and the house is not that sound-proof).

Lastly, sleeping with ear-plugs and a white noise generator FTW. You could drive a backhoe through my front door and I'd likely sleep through it.

I shovel whenever as much as possible. I shovel my driveway as well as 3 of my neighbours. Two travel and the other is a single mom with 5 kids so I try to get it done while it's quick and easy. When there is less snow on the ground there is less to push so I can go across the driveway without overflow.

I still don't understand why some municipalities don't clear their own property (sidewalks). It must suck for the seniors stuck having to clear huge amounts of snow off their sidewalks after big storms on a regular basis.
