Did he actually say those two are small or are people just assuming that?

He is wrong. There is no argument. It worries me that he's so wrong.

Baertschi - 24 points in 51 NHL games - far above average for his draft position
Wotherspoon - played at the WJC last year, is working his way to becoming a solid contributor with the Heat
Granlund - having a fantastic rookie season in the AHL
Gaudreau - I don't think I need to say anything
Brossoit - 2012 WHL playoff MVP. Used in a trade to acquire Smid

Our 2011 draft was fantastic. Given the position of the picks, it was miles ahead of the 2013 draft.

Every time Burke opens his mouth, he scares me. He's too arrogant for his own good.

So Priority number 1 is getting Ekblad. I like this. Then I guess it's going to be Dal Colle and Draisaitl in their ranking. I wonder if MacInnis is a target with their second rounder. 6'4" center. Probably..

true, but it's only been 2 and a half years. Our first pick is close to 0.5 PPG in his first 51 NHL games, and that's not nearly as bad as Burke seems to make it out to be. Our second pick unexpectedly leads our AHL team in goals after only coming over to NA and our third pick is doing fine there as well. Our fourth pick has been the best college player for quite some time now and our fifth and final pick helped us get a solid defenseman in Smid. What is there not to like about this draft?

Flames 2011 draft for those that need a refreshing:

13 - Sven
45 - Granlund
57 - Wotherspoon
104 - Gaudreau
164 - Brossoit

Looks pretty damn good to me.

While I don't agree with the notion that the 2011 draft was bad (obviously nothing's been proven yet... but the players from that draft look promising)... i think rushing to rash statements about what Burke is going to do is pretty silly. He's a guy that's readily admitted that he's not the greatest talent evaluator and tends to lean on his player personnel and scouting guys for that. Nevermind the fact that he took two guys in Kadri and Reilly at the high end of their respective drafts... neither guy is massive and neither really screams 'truculence either.'

I don't like the idea of spurning BPA for size but I don't think we should go running for the hills just yet.

Too much skill, not enough truculence.

Think him diminishing the 2011 and 2012 drafts comes down to the first rounders.

He is not a fan of Sven, and likely doesn't like Jankowski.

In terms of late round picks I am not sure how you can not like some of the players we got in those drafts though.

What a lameass comment about backlund.
Lets give some negative comment about one of our most improved players who is dominating lately.

Burke tries to motivate with fear and outspoken disappointment.

For some players, it works. I'd argue for most, especially the pieces we need to develop moving forward, it doesn't.

Only four guys taken in that draft after Baertschi have played more games than him.

Didn't realize Ondrej Palat was picked at #208 - fourth last pick in the draft with 33pts in 67 GP.

We probably have about 20% of the pieces we need for going forward right now... so not too worried about it.

Stupid. 2011 was a great draft... Baertschi, Granlund, Wortherspoon, Gaudreau, Broissoit. Ton of value relative to draft slot on each of those.

Meh. He has to say that for the time being.

Oh yay... we're back to not drafting the BPA are we.

Won't address the second bit except to say that Burke sounds like a giant #######.

That is my biggest issue with Burke from what we have heard from him in the last 6 months, he is just too damn negative.

I like that Hartley, and Feaster were trying to build a more positive atmosphere around the team.

It is like Burke thinks that if he says a good thing about a player he has to follow it up with at least one negative comment.

Here you can sort what every team drafted in 2011:

if we fail to draft Ekblad, I could easily see Burke drop a few spots to take Nick Ritchie. Lemieux with our second pick. Not that I'd agree with it, but it wouldn't surprise me.

He'll likely handle the trade deadline and the draft this year, then hire the person he wants in the off-season.
