Sven just needs to get his head on straight and get going. He is surrounded by talent and a winning atmosphere. Ward really likes him and thinks highly of him, and the players all really like Ward. I think that is a great situation for him to be in. I don't think there is much more help to give him. Just give him time to turn it around.

Confidence or apathy, he just needs to get his confidence up and his effort level up. That is almost always the difference between a 1st round bust and a 7th round surprise. You can bet that the Flames are working with him closely and monitoring him constantly.

A lot of people were giving up on Backlund at age 24. Nobody should be giving up on Baertschi at age 21.

Too much cheese and not enough bear. I'll give him another 3-4 years but I don't think he'll need that much time

The problem is that I don't think that management will give him that much time to develop.

As per Begin's Twitter, he has announced his retirement due to medical reasons. Was told by a Doctor he could not return this year and has opted to take the advice and retire.

It isn't just management, he only has one more year of waiver free status.

Development doesn't have to happen all in Abbotsford or the AHL though. Most players continue their development in the NHL. I think that's what Righteous1 meant. Baertschi has to get to a point where he can play in the NHL and continue his development into a top 6 player in the NHL. It will take some time.

didn't know where to put this. The Aces will wear Flames inspired jerseys when they host the ECHL Heritage Weekend on February 7/8.

FYI: Russell and Blair Jones are skating. David Jones is not skating. Glencross in a walking boot. Cammalleri is perpetually day-to-day.

I'd expect Abby to get a body or two back before the Olympics. Don't know who, though. Everyone has to clear waivers, I believe.

Blair Jones and Paul Byron I'm going to guess. I can see Street being a nice commodity for some team.

He's one of the top scorers in the AHL, so he can help out any team's farm. Plus, he's on a very cheap deal that ends at the end of the season. Useful call-up option as well.

Backlund is on pace to have a whopping 14 goals and 33 points this season.

Not sure he should be used as some sort of great example of what can happen if you have patience with players.

^ haha but everyone loves Backlund because of his underlying numbers and untapped potential..

I agree with you. Backlund isn't our shinning example of development and patience. I think he might have been brought in a little too early as he toiled on the 4th line for so long here, he might be more offensive if he was in that kind of role, gaining confidence, in a lower league.

The point of the posters original message is to not give up on youth, I agree wholeheartidly even if Backs isnt the best example..

Backlund has had flashes of brilliance before and then gets injured or disappears. This year is a little different because he's really matured physically and is actually able to win battles and control the puck; however, he is still inconsistent. If he can maintain his current play to the end of the season, the Flames might have something, but at this stage, if there's a good offer for him, you consider it.

I expect we will see several teams put a guy or 2 on waivers just prior to the break to keep them playing during the break.

Jones will be eligible for a conditioning stint, so he won't need to be on waivers, but I think both Byron and Street will be waived and demoted just prior to the roster freeze.

Depends on your current expectations for the guy. As a #1 centre that's dreadful. As someone who's the top PK player and who could to form into a solid 3rd line/2nd centre in the mold of a Stephen Yelle, then those numbers are on pace with what he brought to the Avalanche at 24.

My expectations are that he will be a 3rd line center and have been such for quite awhile.

However, he is brutal on FO's, average defensively and pretty soft so he has a long ways to go to be a Stephane Yelle type player.
