I really wouldn't have thought you'd view obtuse as your color but ok.

I just can't stand that corporate culture in some companies of people being judged by how much of their alloted vacation time they use. It's horse****.
So that's their way of getting you guys to work through your holidays?
what a weird way of determining value from an employee. I'd say your HR should be the first to go as they are clearly inadequate. How about they start with the worst workers.

Someone at work asking if an outage we had was a reason she didn't get an email she was expecting. I told her no, email wasn't impacted at all and she asked why.

Like I want to explain to you how networking and email works, just trust me.

Perhaps I did, but my question is, who should be offering free copies of the Quran? The Gideons are an independent non-profit organization that gives free Bibles away. Is Minnie's position that they shouldn't be allowed to do that until some other NP steps up and offers free copies of the Quran? The Gideons were responsible for Bibles being available in hotel rooms. Should that not have been allowed since no one would provide other religious texts? Call me obtuse if you like, but I genuinely don't understand what the issue is.

The issue is I don't think that a public school should be supplying any type of religious/political material to children (grade 5) without prior consent of the parents. I get that it is not a big deal to you, to me it is, and I dislike that I was not given the chance to address it with the school.

But the school is not supplying it. That's my point. They are simply allowing the Gideons to distribute them. As long as they would allow any other similar organizations to do the same, then everything is fair and equal.

Yeah. At a rather large client this morning and one of the new people there says "there is an extra monitor over there...please hook it up so I can have two." I check the video card in the system she is using and tell her we will have to make some alterations before I can do that. Video card doesn't support two monitors. Check with your boss, get approval and we'll get it done.

"But why, it's right there...just hook it up."

I know that the Gideons are distributing them. If they want to allow other organizations in then fine.

The point is that I as a parent was not informed that the Gideons would be coming into the school to give my daughter a book full of ####.

The school should have informed the parents this was happening.

I think that is being overly protective, but your argument is similar to parents getting upset over the fact that their kids were taught about evolution in school without prior knowledge, so your position is not exactly uncommon.

For me, the problem isn't whether the school is providing them, as they clearly aren't. But the school should not be allowing any religious group to distribute texts in a non-religious school. I don't even like the idea of "all religions or nothing" in a public, secular setting.

Everyone is free to explore religion on their own time, but distributing in a public school, especially without the parents' consent, is completely inappropriate. If someone wants to learn more about a certain religion, there are plenty of resources available to them. Go and stop by your local church, synagogue, mosque, etc. and I'm sure they'd love to sit down and have a chat. Public schools aren't the place.

Think what you will, but it is a bit different.

One complaint is about kids being given books filled with fairy tales and told it is true.

The other is kids being taught a topic that is based in science.

UDC, is it more of a gear grinder that it seems to be disguised as something else? would you be more accepting if it just said "The Bible" on the front?

Just curious because the look of the book makes it look like something that it is not even close to. I mean, if I was a child in school and was given a book called "The answers" and it looked like a text book I would be opening it up and reading what's going on...and then wondering what the hell is going on

Ummm no it's not. One is teaching children scientific fact, and one is giving them material based on religion and spirituality, of which there are many varied opinions and sects. There is a large difference.

If the kids were old enough to make a choice for themselves (say 15) then it probably wouldn't be as much of an issue, but for 5 year olds I can definitely understand why a parent would be upset.

Would you be upset if your 5 year old came home with material on Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, etc... or how about Communism, Facism, etc..?

These are not learning materials, Gideons spread them with the inent of conversion. Giving them to children who can't tell the difference is wrong.

To say I would be more accepting would be disingenuous, but the disguising is also a piss off. It appears like the are trying to "hide" what the book really is.

I would also be upset by this. Public schools should not be picking and choosing what materials are to be presented, outside of the curriculum. Essentially this is being used to by-pass the parents and give information directly to children.

Agreed. If something like that was given to my son under the guise of something it's not I would be pissed off too.

Is it possible that it was distributed off campus? I recall getting a New Testament from someone standing on the street corner just off of school property when I was in middle school.

I guess anything is possible, as i said in the original I only saw this last night @ 11 when I got him from work.

That being said, knowing my daughter I don't see where stopping to talk to someone.
