Some of the LRVs are getting old and unreliable, but the electrical/catenary has undergone recent replacement and upgrades for the most part.
Aside from that, I'm sure it's partly social media, but a big part of it is that problems have much more effect and wider reach for more people due to higher ridership. With trains being much more frequent, this means that problems have a much larger and quicker cascading effect down the line and it takes longer to recover from breakdowns and service disruptions.
Some I'd the older LRVs (about a third of the oldest generation U2 model) well be replaced by an order of the newest mode which will begin to arrive in 2015.
