My guess is when Knight goes up, he stays up. If a body is needed on short notice, it'll probably be Max Reinhart.

Granlund was called up this morning. Will be in the lineup vs the Canucks tonight.

Surprising. Not because Granlund isn't excellent. He shows poise that comes from playing with men, and he's good all around, but I would have still gone with Street. He's one of the AHLs best this season.

I think Granlund is waiver exempt as well? All the rookies?

Yup, anyone still on his ELC is waiver exempt.

Street seems to have benefitted greatly from his NHL time this year; let's hope Granlund gains as much from the experience.

Thanks for this. I made me curious about the make-up of the team with regards to how everyone was acquired (all stats current to the end of December 28, 2013)...

First looking at the goalies:

The Heat have had 4 goalies see action this season.

Ortio and Brossoit were drafted by the Flames. Berra was acquired in a trade prior to playing his first North American pro game. MacDonald was a Flames' waiver claim, signed to an extension last season.

After last night, Ortio has now played more than 50% of all minutes for the Heat this season. MacDonald and Berra have each played a little less than a quarter of the total minutes, and Brossoit is dead to us now, but played a little under 5% of the minutes.

Now, to the skaters. I broke everyone down into different categories (those in red have had a call-up to Calgary this season)...

Flames Draft picks: Nemisz, Reinhart, Ramage, Ferland, Baertschi, Granlund, Wotherspoon, Sieloff

Free agent signing prior to player's first North American pro game: Jooris, Elson, Breen, Eddy, Martin

Trade prior to player's first NA pro game: Knight, Hanowski, Horak

Free agent signing after player's first NA pro game: Billins, Street, Smith

Trade after player's first NA pro game: Cundari, Byron, Jones, MacDermid

There are also 10 players who have suited up for the Heat who are not on NHL contracts: Olson, Bancks, Lamb, Arsene, MacKenzie, Lafranchise, McKelvie, Connolly, Sivak, Lyon

Now, for the statistical breakdown...

Total (skaters only): 612 GP, 110 G, 197 A, 307 P

Code:
Acquired	GP	G	A	P
Drafted 176	33	48	81
FA pre pro	70	5	12	17
Trade pre pro	80	22	36	58
FA after pro	61	23	36	59
Trade after pro	75	16	31	47

NHL contracts	462	99	163	262
AHL contract	150	11	34	45
Percentages of totals:
Code:
Acquired	GP	G	A	P
Drafted 28.76%	30.00%	24.37%	26.38%
FA pre pro	11.44%	4.55%	6.09%	5.54%
Trade pre pro	13.07%	20.00%	18.27%	18.89%
FA after pro	9.97%	20.91%	18.27%	19.22%
Trade after pro	12.25%	14.55%	15.74%	15.31%

NHL contracts	75.49%	90.00%	82.74%	85.34%
AHL contracts	24.51%	10.00%	17.26%	14.66%

I have no idea how those numbers compare to other teams, or past Heat teams, but it's good to see that players who likely have a future in Calgary are contributing well in Abbotsford.

Great work getbak. So basically Knight and Hanowski have provided a little less than 20% of the Heat's offense (minus Horak's contributions). That's wonderful to hear.

Kudos Feaster. Kudos.

I was surprised to see that Knight is the only player who has played in all 34 games so far. Hanowski and Olson are the only ones at 33.

Nice work getbak. Like you mentioned, I don't have any idea either how it stacks up to other teams or past teams, but I thought it was really impressive that such a large percentage of Heat goals were scored by 1st or 2nd year AHL pros.

Crazy to think that from the end of this season and into next season the Heat could very well add Gaudreau, Agostino, Arnold, Gordon, Kulak, Culkin and Gillies, all talented players who will be pushing hard for ice time.

Like them or not, Feaster and Weisbrod sure tossed a lot of mud at the wall.

Yup, this is true. An outlier to this is goalies who signed as a 20 year old, get 4 years of waiver protection, so Ortio won't be on an ELC next season but will still be waiver protected.

College and other players who are signed as older players gets confusing.

curious for those that more actively follow the AHL, is Ortio still considered a rookie in that league? Wondering if he is getting any rookie awards/praise.

okay, I'll bite ... I did this for the last 3 Calder Cup champions. Didn't filter the AHL contracts though, that was too much work ... plus it sometimes changed during the season (for example, Cory Conacher started the season on an AHL contract with Norfolk, then signed an NHL contract in January). So for that reason, the AHL contracts are included.

Interesting. So, the Heat are about on par with the Admirals (who were Tampa's team at the time IIRC), but well below where the Senators (Ottawa) and Griffins (Detroit) were as far as Drafted players on their AHL rosters.

One thing I noticed when putting the Heat list together is that Ortio is the only player from the 2009 Draft still in the organization. Nemisz, Bouma, and Brodie are still left from 2008. Backlund is the oldest Flames Draft pick who is still around. He is the only one left from 2007, and no one from an earlier draft is still with the Flames.

They seem to have been turning things around since the 2010 Draft, so hopefully the drafted percentages go up.

Heat lose Greg Nemisz to a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes for Kevin Westgarth.

Educated guess tells me that Westgarth is not AHL bound as he is not waiver exempt. Curious to see who, if anyone, gets sent down.

Heat have signed a former first round pick, Adrian Foster. Played for Ward in Houston.

Interesting pick, stats on the aces players as good wonder why those in the system wouldn't have been moved up or offered contract??
