I hope we are not. It is time to give Jackman's ice time time to Ferland, Poirier or Knight. Similarly, it is time to consider trading Smith and call up Tyler Wotherspoon.
It's rebuild, not retool time.

long time coming. I thought a pretty dumb move on the flames part was a few deadlines ago, when instead of trading him to the sharks, as was rumoured, flames signed him to a 2 year deal instead.

It s possible to make a trade where a big ticket contract comes back and doesn't hurt the rebuild. The rebuild is going to take another two or three years, at least, and the team can afford to bring in some veterans or bloated contracts if there are quality kids coming along with them. The Flames still have a ton of cap space, so a couple of bad contracts they have to eat in a deal is not a bad thing, if there are good young players coming back. I doubt that any of the players on the farm will get a taste until the major moves are made and the dust settles.

Didn't we already have space to add another contract or 3?

I think Jones would push Backlund too.

I wonder if this is actually a precursor to Backlund getting moved.
Jones is a better 4th line center than Backlund or Colborne
Colborne is a better 3rd line center than Backlund.
Stajan/Monahan 1/2

We're far from the point where we can fill the roster with our prospects. Since some veterans will probably be traded at trade deadline or before, we'll need other some others anyway. Bigger ones, most specifically.
Since we can take extra contracts and inflated salary, trading our vets for other vets should result in us also getting extra picks/prospects out of the process.
Plus of course we can just new vets in the summer with all that cap space.

That was definitely a head scratcher for sure as Jackman was having a poor season. I could see a one year deal but two years for a player of this type IMO is silly.
He reminds me a little of Comeau in that you can't fault him for his effort and there is a small place for guys like him in the NHL but both of them were put in roles they should never been placed in like Comeau on 1st and 2nd line and Jackman playing with Hudler and Monahan. If they were handled properly by the coaches there would have been a lot less fan disdain for them at times.

Yes, but if you add Gaudreau, Arnold, Agostino all at the end of the year and possibly Gillies, they will only now have 2 or 3 spot to add.
I am sure that they are going to be going hard after the best UFA NCAA guys like Warning and Taker. They really won't have much competition to get a late season call up for a couple games like Hanowski last year.

We are very lucky that Monahan fills this role.
I hope Backs isn't moved. I love what he brings to this team and I'd rather see him convert to wing before trading him.

I've been thinking that as well. Backlund really hasn't played poorly, but I think he has been surpassed as a player with long term potential in Calgary. I think he would be a very good fit on several other teams, especially those looking to make improvements elsewhere in the lineup and not take a step backwards. Something along the lines of Backlund in a swap for Schenn out of Philadelphia. I think we have add something substantial to make that happen, and probably eat a contract, but it could be something of interest for Philly. Say something along the lines of Schenn, Schenn and Straka for Baertschi, Backlund and Butler. I hate the thought of losing Baertschi, but the idea of having Monahan, Schenn, Colborne, and Knight as your centers makes me think that would be an outstanding position to be in for the next decade.
Another target could be Tampa where they are on the edge of falling out of the playoff picture after a great start. They really need to find a couple of bodies that can step in and contribute. Backlund would be a solid fit in the middle for them and we could give them some cap relief. We would get Connolly or Panik but eat Purcell's contract. We'd likely have to ship them a RW to fill in, which means Backlund and Stempniak for Connolly/Panik and Purcell. Tampa might have to kick in a sweetener, like Dylan Blujus, a big right handed defenseman, but I think the potential is there considering their position. It is nice to have both the cap space and the contract flexibility to make some of the imbalanced deals.

I really wouldn't be surprised to see Backlund shipped out (with some other assets as well) for Luke Schenn or Jake Gardiner. I think we could live to regret it as I feel Mikael is on the verge of figuring it out & putting up some points.

I'm not too concerned with baklunds point total I am however worried about his weak board play and turnovers in our own zone

Jones deserves a chance and perhaps if he impresses he can also be flipped for a late round pick towards the deadline?
I think the Flames will be making moves relatively soon. I just hope they don't re-sign Stajan to a long term deal.

Sure but you are forgetting that at the deadline the flames will also be trading players away. I get that Cammi can get a pick plus contract back, but i doubt Stajan, Stempniak, Butler, ect, can.

They already had 3 or 4 contract spots left. So either they are clearing space for one massive trade, in which the Flames get a massive return for one of their players (one player for four players), or the Flames are about to make a chain of trades that sees more contracts coming back than going out (one for two type trades). I guess the other option is that you're telling us to book nothing, because I don't see either scenario very likely.

Most teams are at 49 or 50 though, so they would need to send a little something back if they are adding a player. Even if it's a prospect like the one we sent out when we got Wideman. It all depends on what is going on moving forward. The more openings we have though, the better it is, just because we will have more options available to us over the coming few months.

Good foot soldier
Should have traded him in the middle of his career season two years ago. Probably could have got a second rounder.
