Good news about Breen and Stempniak:
Scott Cruickshank @CruickshankCH 1m #Flames practice -- Smid (no. 3) out there. So are Breen, Stempniak. #nhlpn

Has Brossiots value dropped that much? Wasn't he on the world junior team?
Oiler fans definitely overvalue Smid, but I guess that'll happen when he's on your top pairing. Whatba crappy team, lol.
Not crazy on the trade, don't even really see the point of it. But not freaking out about it either. Horak wasn't getting any better. Just wonder about Brossiots celing in 5 years.

Brossiot was cut from the world junior team. He is far down on the flames goalie depth chart. We literally got a 27 year old stay at home D that can probably be a top 4 guy for 2 players that are at best 50-50 to be NHL players down the road.

Brossoit is definitely a solid prospect - no doubt about that.
It's simply a question of odds: he hasn't even established himself as a AHLer yet.
He has the tools to be a good goalie, so he probably has a 20% chance (at most) of becoming a solid NHL starter.
That makes him a good goalie prospect. But we got a top 4 NHL defenseman.

At the end of the day, playing for the World Junior team means very little. Brossoit was a final cut for team Canada one year. The guy we traded for, Roy, actually made the team and he's a lesser prospect at this point.

I think you have the goaltenders backwards. Roy was the highly regarded kid coming out of junior after being a star in the QMJHL and making Team Canada. I see the goaltenders in the deal as a wash. Both still have upside. It will be interesting to actually see what Roy does with some real coaching. May yet surprise.

this is what I'd go with ...
Brodie - Smid
Wideman - Butler
Russel - O'Brien / Breen
Smid may be a great complement to offensive-minded Brodie and he should be able to log big minutes so why not to give it a try.

Abbotsford Coach Troy G. Ward had some pretty high praise for Horak at the press conference last night following the Heat game:

Quote:
Horak had played extensively with the Heat over the past three seasons, and his departure was an emotional one.
"We've become very close, both myself and the team," Ward said. "He asked one thing last night on the phone (after the trade was announced). He asked, 'Is there a chance I could come in and say goodbye to my teammates?'
"I think that says enough. That's a classy man. He came in this morning, said goodbye."

Wow, I didn't realize until now our entire D corps was made up of lefties, except Wideman. Gotta say though, it looks solid after bringing in Smid.
Giordano
Wideman
Brodie
Smid
Russell
O'Brien/Butler
Not great, but not bad.

Aaron Vickers @AAVickers 4m Funny enough, Ladislav Smid said he's talked to Steve Staois, the only other player traded between Calgary and Edmonton in 2010.
Aaron Vickers @AAVickers 4m
Smid: “He just said, ‘Don’t think about it too much, just embrace it. It’s good to be in a different city. It’s a fresh, new start'."
Aaron Vickers @AAVickers 3m
More Smid on Staios: "He also told me I’m going to really enjoy it here. It’s a great city and the fans are amazing here.”

I would say Brodie and Gio are much, much better options just interested why you think he should be able to play big minutes when he hasn't at any point in his career.
I would be surprised to see him play any more than the 19 mins he has averaged on the Oilers during his career.

At this point would consider that Girodano is injured.

As long as Gio is injured, Smid is IMHO the best complement to Brodie.
(not to mention Gio's struggles in the top pairing)

Aaron Vickers @AAVickers 2m Smid partnered with Derek Smith today. Hartley cautioned it doesn't necessarily mean the two will be together on Tuesday, though.
