And is there any idea of much of the proposed bonuses they might ahve had to pay this year??
Pretty sure you can exceed the cap by bonuses but you are then penalized the following year by the same amount. That's how Boston was able to sign Iggy. They didn't need to dump Smid for cap room.

You can exceed the cap by bonuses by 7.5% of the upper limit which is $4.8 million this season.

The Oilers have $9.1 million in performance bonuses thanks to RNH, Yakupov, Schultz, Belov and Petry's ELC. $4.3 million of that can't be used in the bonus cushion and still will count towards the $64.3 million limit.

Source: http://capgeek.com/faq/what-s-a-bonus-overage
http://capgeek.com/oilers/

Capgeek's cap calculator doesn't take into account if a team is exceeding the bonus cushion like the Oilers are.

So, I figured since this thread touches on our goaltending, I should mention that Ortio is doing great to start the year. Hope he keeps it up tonight.

echl stats: 4GP 2 shutout 1.01gga .944% 3-1
ahl stats: 4GP 1.69gga .936% 4-0

A lot better than his previous north american pro attempt. This is likely another reason why Feaster felt comfortable to let Brossoit go.

It seems like all of Ramo, Berra and Ortio are turning their games up a notch because there is an opening available if they want to take it. Competition is a very good thing.

Well since we aquired Horak via the Tim Erixon holdout. I don't mind the D man pick up. In the big picture it is great asset management.

Out:
Tim Erixon
2011 5th (rangers ended up taking Shane McColgan)

In.
Roman Horak Ladislav Smid
two 2nds (M. Granlund, T. Wotherspoon)

Not too bad! Good moves by Feaster there.

I don't think single games have as much of an impact on a player's trade value as you seem to think they do. GM's base their evaluation of a player on scouting reports compiled over years, not just ones over the last week. EDM acquired Brossoit based on scouting him for years in junior. They certainly didn't acquire him because he had a couple shutouts in the ECHL.

I wonder what number Smid will wear with the Flames. 5 is obviously gone, 55 would be an easy pick but it's also gone. He wore 17 in Portland - gone.

Maybe 21, since Horak is gone? 3, as an available "traditional" D number? I'm curious.

This trade makes me think of how the vikings raided villages.

Killed all the men, took all the women, ate the horses and left only a burning pile.

Edmonton got fleeced.

It's more like they forgot to store food for the winter and accidentally set their own village on fire, after which all their women left and took the horses. Then we came to rescue a couple of freezing villagers, although unfortunately some of our own guys got left behind.

A Berra / Ortio tandem was my wish to start the season. Maybe we finish the season with Ortio as the starter in late May..

This is Edmonton we're talking about. The women ARE the horses.
