I still don't understand what the Oilers were doing here. This only makes a little sense if Smid asked to be traded.

Not sure how Smid feels about this trade, but I imagine it is a lot like going from San Quenten to Rikers.

He had the standard reaction... shocked, but really excited. He says he thinks the Flames work hard, so that makes him happy.

Fine, we got Smid and that's all well and good but far and away the best part of this trade is the Oil trading AWAY defence - decent defence. What exactly do they think their deficiencies are?

I've sure he will have some great stories about his old locker room for his new locker room.

I can't imagine he was too thrilled when everyone was made a captain this summer except him and Hemsky

I think part of that was because so many fans are desperate to win the Erixon trade, and be able to say we didn't lose a whole lot by being forced to deal him. If he were a Flames pick I think he would have finished lower than 11th.

After sleeping on it, I actually like this trade a lot. Initially I disliked it because I like Horak a lot. But I was starting to get the feeling that he won't ever make the Flames line up. I think he'll be in the Oilers roster right away if only to make this trade look good for Edmonton fans. Brossoit, I never really cared for so I'm OK with him being traded as well.

Also probably to keep Oilers roster count below 50 and with Broissoit coming in as an upgrade no need for Roy for the Oilers anymore.

Flames get the better of this one. Horak is likable but replaceable.
Makes totally sense that the last helmet less player ever in the NHL trades away a stay at home defenseman.

Sadly, I think long term this could be good for both teams. Smid to Calgary for all the reasons previously posted, but Horak and Brossoit fill some needs in Edmonton. The Oilers are 28th in the league and their season is over, so losing Smid isn't going to impact them much. They have Nurse, Klefbom, and Musil as big D in the minors, and are going to have the opportunity to draft another one half a year from now.
My biggest fear is they draft enough #1 overall that they eventually can't help but get it right. My first thought when I read about this was they are going to get Reinhardt AND McDavid - two more first overall picks = The Drive for Five.

I just had a look at Smid's stats; in the three years the Oilers had #1 overall picks, he was a plus player in 2 of them.
 2009-10: +5 in 51 GP
 2010-11: -10 in 78 GP
 2011-12: +4 in 78 GP

That's almost more impressive than Brodie staying even while play 26 minutes of hockey in a 9-0 loss.

He has been assigned to OKC. Not sure the Oilers even know they have him. All interviews, media stuff they are talking solely about Brossoit. Seem to have little clue about Horak or even care they got him.

Edmonton really screwed up that Yakupov draft IMO. Should've stuck with their original plan and draft Murray.

Horak is yet another undersized skilled center for them. I don't know where he fits with them organizationally.

Brossoit has a chance to be something. He played for the Oil Kings. Neither player helps the oilers now, so may as well focus on the guy who might be able to help down the road.

Was their original plan to draft Murray? I thought they were pretty set on Yak from the get go because 'BPA' and all that.

The scouting staff was almost unanimous in picking Murray, and a higher up vetoed the pick.
