Not sure what to make of this trade.

Obviously it is good value for Horak and Brossoit. Horak was buried in our sudden depth at C and Brossoit was arguably 6th or so on our depth chart for goaltenders.

But where doe Smid fit in the plans? Is his acquisition to shore up our D in the absense of Giordano? Or does this team actually think they can contend in the Pacific?

Well he is only 27 and signed long term so I think he is a piece of the rebuild

Thought this was the first ever direct trade between the two franchises but then remembered Staios. Sportsnet just confirmed this is the second one.

Anyways, late to the game but I've always thought Smid was a pretty consistently good feature in the otherwise pretty consistently bad wasteland that is the more recent version of the Edmonton Oilers. Solid stay at home guy who will immediately improve our top 4 for the foreseeable future. Not a short term move by any means.

Sad to see Horak go as I thought he had good hockey sense and was pretty much on the cusp of making it to the NHL full time. Wish him the best up north (as long as it's not against us). Every game he plays at the NHL level while Erixon toils away in the minors makes my heart grow ever so slightly.

Contract through 2016-2017. Unless traded, he'll be here a while then.

I'm Ok with this. Smid is a pretty tough guy to play against.

Just have to run him through that Zombie strength shower thing, to get the Greaser stank off of him.

I actually think this trade fits the rebuild perfectly. You improve the D, which benefits the development of Berra and Ramo. And you also buy a little time for Seiloff and Wotherspoon to develop. If they are not ready next year, you can resign one or more of our RFA's (Billins/Breen) after the season or re-up on Russell. Whichever direction, Feaster and Burke just benefited the young goalies and bought time for the young D'men.

This is the Oilers organization we are talking about. They've already traded a couple injured players.

Pretty sad that a team with a bunch of cheap rookies has to trade a 3.5mil D for cap space to sign an ECHL goalie. Some bizarre money cap management there.

Calgary doesn't have any depth at C and the fact that Horak can't make the team reflects poorly on him as a prospect going forward IMO.

This is what I would like to know. How close are they to the cap and what kind of a contract did they give to that wingnut Bryzgalov?

Yup.

Gio-Brodie
Wideman-Smid

Not great, but at least average, and better than we had prior. Really needed that stay at home guy in our top 4. Well done Feaster.

Haha, well I pretty much had up until today. At least this one will probably pan out a wee bit better for us.
