Late to the party but i like this trade. I liked Horak but even i knew that he was never going to get a shot with Hartely around. Smid is big, physical, and youngish. I wonder if they will try and trade SOB when Gio gets back?
On another note are the Oilers packing it in for the year?
Got to hand it to Feaster, he finally got his "need salary cap space" deal. Didn't think it would happen.

Also like the trade. I was never sold on Horak. Out D is now definitely better and for a stable guy, which we need with the Russell's and widemans.
Imagine what the oilers could have got for Smid at the trade deadline?!

Alright well I guess you just like saying useless statements.
I hear Crosby is good but he plays a lot.

2-2.5 is what I would like to see him paid so I guess no need for the way there just overpaid.

not sure why you need to get so fixated on this. It is a quantitative stat that gets increased in large part with the more time you play and more chances you get. But that wasn't really the point of my statement, just the point you seemed to focus on.
As I said the stat tells us zero about his ability to play top 4 minutes or against top talent. If you find that useless then so be it but not sure why you didn't just ignore it in that case instead of going on some BS route about Crosby being good and me having some sort of theory.

If it was Gillies going the other way, this place would've imploded. Brossoit is mid-tier prospect, that is about on par with Ortio. Horak had effectively become redundant with the acquisitions of Colborne and Knight in addition to Monahan, Jankowski, etc. Too far down the depth chart to be effective here. Great trade Feaster. Solid top 4 when Gio's back.

Who is this goaltender Oliver Roy that Flames picked up with Smid? Not a fan of trading with the Oilers especially giving up Brossoit. He might not be with the NHL anytime soon but he might develop to be a good goaltender. I am hoping he'll be another Devan Dubnyk. I was also hoping they would have traded him and Horak somewhere in the East. Otherwise, i think Smid can help the Flames power play. The guy can shoot hard from the point.

I'm actually okay with this.
Smid probably will mean more for the Flames than borderline NHLer Horak and Brossoit for Roy seems like a slight drop, but not much of one.

Awesome trade.
Brossoit/Roy is a wash (although I think Brossoit has a bit more of an upside). Horak will never be more than a 3rd liner, and Calgary has a glutton of those. Smid can play top 4 minutes effectively and with some consistency, he's still only 27, and it's a positional need for the Flames (that they gain without giving up a roster player). $3.5 is about right for a guy of his caliber given the market, and it's for another 4 years.
It's amazing that the circus continues on in Edmonton. They get rid of a player that they need, in a position where they are lacking, for pretty much nothing of real substance.

In a time of great change in the National Hockey League, at least we have the Edmonton Oilers to show us that their incompetence is eternal.
The Edmonton Oilers traded Ladislav Smid and Olivier Roy to the Eternal Enemy for Laurent Brossoit and Roman Horak.
Brossoit is a mediocre-ass goalie from the Dub, and as a former Edmonton Oil King was always going to be outrageously overpaid for by Kevin Lowe at some point. Roman Horak is a six-foot-nothing centre who can't score much professionally and was a bit player on the Czech world junior teams in the era when they couldn't win ####. Ladislav Smid is one of the two Oilers defensemen who could play a bit of defense, obviating what tradition compels me to call our depth at that position.

Will definitely miss Roman Horak. Really good kid who loves the game and was a pleasure to deal with. He'll get a better chance to play in the NHL in Edmonton than in Calgary, though, so this is a good move for him and the Flames.
