Another reason why I like this trade is that we have a major problem with our defense corp, both in terms of depth and quality of the prospects there. The only one that I feel is a guaranteed NHLer is Sieloff, with Wotherspoon being a step below.
Having a top 6 of Gio, Brodie, Smid, Wideman, Sieloff and Russell isn't as bad moving forward. It will continue to need upgrades, but that takes time.

Those are also stats that speak to playing a lot and don't necessarily speak to his ability to play top 4 minutes against good teams in the NHL.
Better to have more hits and blocked shots than not but they don't really say much about the ability to play top 4 minutes.

Smart move by Feaster. It takes the focus off of Sven being benched. I kid. I kid.

I was hoping Eberle would come to the Flames for any of the Flames players right now. WTF, Schimd?!? Oh yeah, Flames are in a rebuild mode - guess it's OK. If this was done like 2 years ago, I'd be like burning the Flames flag and all. Should've given then Ramo for Yakupov or something.

Is she still Smid's girlfriend?
Not too bad..

So by your weird theory then he should have been top 6 in ice time among defencemen last year.

What theory are you talking about?
And I don't know or care what place he should have been in ice time last year.

It's hilarious that the Oilers had to make a deal like this to clear cap space so they could bring on Bryzgalov. With that hot garbage lineup, they actually had to clear cap space! That's great cap management for you! Good work Feaster & Burke. Keep fleecing these teams up against the cap.
(not that I don't think Horak isn't going to be good, but he's been made expendable)

I can't believe Smid is only 27. Really good trade for the Flames at a time when some defensive help is required, and shouldn't be looked at as a reach for the playoffs or abandoning the rebuild.

Smid will help the Flames be tougher to play against on the back end and he would be tops on the Flames in hits and blocked shots. His size will be very useful against teams like St. Louis, LA, San Jose, and Anaheim. Burke is really influencing this team. This is about getting bigger at the right price from a position of strength, much like the Colborne trade, a far cry from trades from weakness (ex. Regehr trade).

They had 4.75 million before the trade - so what are they paying Bryz??

Salary dump for Edmonton. Flames get the best player in the trade.
This is a situation where ample cap space really comes in handy.

Lets not forget Wotherspoon, Culkin, Cundari, Ramage, Breen, Kanzig. I don't mind the quality of defensive prospects moving foward and it will only get better with each additional draft. Especially if we could get our hands on Ekblad.

I'm sad about Horak, as I think he's been way underrated and looked even stronger this year when he played in the preseason. But I guess he wasn't big or offensive enough to seriously get a chance on the big club.. Brossoit makes sense too, seeing as the Oil probably have had the best look at him of any over recent years. But Gilles is clearly the top goalie in our prospect pool, so I'm not as concerned as I would be otherwise.
I can't hate this trade though, as Smid is probably the only d-man I've actually liked or thought was half good on the Oilers. I just hope their terrible system and coaching/style hasn't got too ingrained in his play. But the past couple years I've quite liked him. And we really needed help on D. Having Butler and SOB holding the fort just wasn't going to cut it. So I like the return.
Scorak is going to be a bright spot for the Oilers in years to come, though. I just know it. Solid 2-way player in the making.

I'd say this counts as the first official time that Feaster has proven his word correct when he said he would be able to take advantage of teams with money issues.
We lost two decent prospects that both had respectable but overall low chances of sticking in the NHL long-term (Brossoit is guess work, he stands a small chance of being great, but if he and Gillies both develop at the same rate he would never surpass Gillies), and we gained a player type we sorely lacked. Just that solid defensive presence, not an all-star, but a player that brings something none of our other guys really do at this point.
That's how you rebuild smart, deal low chart prospects in positions of abundance for quality NHLer's, while maintaining a steady group of high chart prospects.
I could be wrong, and they could go and trade Sven for some post-apex whoever and ruin everything, but trades like this help the rebuild significantly. Prospects are assets, and as soon as you feel that you have enough players charting above certain prospects, you use them as currency.

Oilers must be really high on Brossoit. Conversely the Flames I feel may have soured on the guy for some reason or maybe they felt he was redundant in the organization with Gillies. Smid is serviceable I guess so this trade is somewhat palpable as Horak was never going to play for Hartley.

I guess that explains why Dave Semenko was at the Heat games.
Horak was made expendable by Knight and Colborne IMO. Brossoit and Roy is more or less a lateral move. I haven't minded Smid at all. He'll help quite a bit on the blue line.
Good trade. I like it.
