Don't understand the Pens keeping Maata up at all. In all likelihood they will end up picking a defenseman at the deadline and he'll be bumped out of the line up come crunch time. He's a good prospect but not so obviously ready that they need to have him up. Not quite understanding the thinking there.

Surprising that so many are down on Jankowski given his progress so far. He's having a great year so far with 4 goals and 1 assist in his first 4 games, a couple of the goals being highlight reel worthy. Looks like he's really grown into that big frame and is starting to use it. Not to mention that his combination of size and speed is very rare (Marleau might be a good comparison, and he's had a pretty good career).

Based on what I've seen of Jankowski and Seiloff so far, they look like great picks and not difficult to project that we could have two future impact players here.

Your premise is that he's "not obviously ready" and that's where the issue lies. I don't think they would have kept him if he wasn't obviously ready.

In hindsight, does the fact that Maatta playing in the NHL (and looking pretty good) matter that much to a team that is in the rebuild? We can all go back to that selection in 3-4 years when the Flames should be a competitive team and analyze that pick. Jankowski was a 'hail-mary' type of selection, and that is because of his high-ceiling and project status. [...]
You're right. He was a long-term prospect from the start and it'll be interesting to see how a player like him develops.

The one thing for me is that the pick was sometimes defended by saying that it was a bad draft so you could take a chance on a player that has many attributes but has only played low-level hockey. I think it's beginning to look like there were several picks available with high potential and less risk. However, Jankowski may still prove to have been a good choice.

Yes, I remember everything that was said at the time about it being a poorer draft, and that it was used to support the Jankowski pick. I think Weisbrod had initially told Feaster to trade the 1st pick away, until he saw Jankowski.

They scouted him intensely and liked him enough to pick him over guys that were closer to the NHL. Flames drafted him based on what type of player he could be down the road versus what type of player he is now. I think it will keep on looking like a risk pick until Jankowski makes the NHL, or at least really lights up the NCAA. Until then, there will always be arguments over how smart of a pick that was. I personally really like it - 6'4" (or whatever he is) centermen who are very good skaters, and have talent like him are very rare in the NHL, and are usually thought of as 'franchise players'. If he develops into that, then it becomes: "Philadelphia was so stupid for selecting Laughton ahead of Jankowksi".

He is the most interesting prospect (in my eyes) due to his status as a project coupled with his huge possible impact for the Flames down the road if he pans out.

He might be ready (although I doubt it from watching him in junior) but they have a ton of prospects who are close to him and they are burning a year of an ELC for a 6th d-man who will likely spend the end of the season/playoffs in the press box. Just doesn't make a ton of sense to me asset wise.

Nichushkin with his first NHL goal tonight.

Nice top-corner snipe from a beauty drop pass from Dillon.

Seth Jones lead the predators in ice time last game at over 30 minutes. Impressive

This is starting to look like a really deep draft.

The early returns are definitely living up to the hype that is for sure

He'll win the Calder this year.

I think that' same safe bet. I was astounded he fell into the Preds' laps.

I wonder if his emergence might make Shea Weber and that insane contract of his expendable for the Preds. They'll have to be conscious of that $7.8 million cap hit when Jay-Z comes calling after Jones' ELC expires...

Call me a homer but I think a certain #23 might have a chance at the Calder as well.

Weber does lack a NMC. I wonder if MacT is going to make a huge offer? 1 of the big 4 forwards, Nurse, 1st?

No way that happens. I don't think Nashville would complain of having another Suter - Weber pairing.

Saying Monahan has a chance at the Calder is not being a homer. He needs to keep it up but if he gets 25 goals and 50pts he will be in the mix. I assume post trade deadline he will be our clear cut #1 in terms of minutes, match ups etc

You never know what could happen

Hypothetically speaking if Monahan did get 25g/50pts and Jones got say 8-10g/25-30pts and kept logging 30 minutes, I reckon Jones would get the nod. For Monahan to win I think Jones would have to fall off with his TOI (won't happen), get injured or get dick all points.

I like Drouin but I'm amazed that the Lightning didn't pick him. Seemed to be an obvious fit for that team. I imagine the Preds are still pinching themselves though.

The return would have to be insane for them to trade Weber. They have already paid out a huge chunk of that crazy contract in bonuses.
