An unquestioned superstar leads his team to championships.
I always suggested he was a great player but never a superstar. Never hid behind his last few years.
Iggy is/was very media friendly on top of being a good player...that combo created the superstar impression.

2 players who without a doubt will be in the hall of fame and who both have scored more than 500 goals weren't superstars?

There are a lot of 500 goal scorers who were very good players but not superstars. Guess it depends on your definition of a superstar.

superstar - someone who is dazzlingly skilled in any field

Name a couple in the modern era who had 500 goals who weren't considered superstars.

And just because your definition is different doesn't mean it is right. Iginla was a superstar without an ounce of doubt. And so was Nieuwendyk.

So Iginla was one call in game 6 away from being a superstar?

I know we're all entitled to our opinions, but come on.

I don't think it's debatable. Nieuwendyk has the edge in personal statistics and team accomplishments.

If anything, this thread might be establishing the relative underappreciation of the 3 time cup winner, 1 time conn smythe, 560 goal scoring two-way centre.

Right now, All time:

Neuwendyk: GP 1257 G 564 P 1126
Iginla: GP 1239 G 530 P 1108

Nieuwendyk only hung them up 6 years ago.

I bet if you count up the dead puck era goals scored by both of them since Jarome came into the league that Nieuwendyk isn't that far behind Iginla's total, and might be ahead of it in Goals Per Game. One guy's prime vs. another's decline.

Someone wanna do the math?

I will eat my pubes if Nieuwendyk's "dead puck" goals are any where near Iginla's goals.

The dead puck era started when? Joe scored almost half his career NHL goals in his first 6 NHL seasons.

In his final 13 seasons Nieuwendyk cracked 30 goals twice.

Wait, the dead puck era are now Iginla's prime scoring years, thus eliminating a 50 season, a forty goal season and five 30 goal seasons?

You'd have to be a head case to believe that.

Yeah, Bourque never really reached that superstar status until leaving Boston for Colorado.

For my own curiosity, what's Joe Thornton's status?

I hate when people use his lack if Stanley cups as a reason for iginla being a lesser player... I would think this is the last place where I would have to remind people of the biggest missed goal call in hockey history during game 6 of the 2004 Stanley cup final. What he did in the 2004 playoffs was legendary and is still considered one of the greatest playoff performances OF ALL TIME! I still get chills watching what conroy called "The greatest shift ever played".

Interesting debate for sure, maybe I will have to rethink it.

Iginla
Macinnis
MacDonald
Niewendyk
personally, I would never put MacDonald over Nieuwendyk.
