I remember when everyone thought he was a bust for a first overall pick. Turns out he just might be the best player taken in his draft year. Also taken were Gonchar, Khabibulin, Yashin, Stillman, Straka, Kasparaitis, Peca, Lehtinen, and Aucoin. Out of those guys I'd say only one or two had better careers than Hamirlik.

I think the Sutter wanted to keep him, but likely at a shorter term at very least not at 4 years (and $5.5m per year (2007 prices)), as Montreal offered that summer.

Sarich and Aucoin came in, Hamrlik out. Who knows if the Keenan hiring/Playfair demotion/not letting Darryl back behind the bench situation, in June of that year, had anything to do with it either.
