okay, i went to play shinny last week at the south fish creek rec centre and had a blast. killed myself in the effort, but i had a freekin' blast.

this week:
  • When: Friday, October 5, 10:00pm-11:15 pm
  • Where: South Fish Creek Rec Centre
  • Cost: $10
as an adult (that's going on 10 years now) i've never taken a pass on ice. it's quite, quite different from ball hockey and roller hockey and anything i've done since i was a kid. although i can skate, i'm nowhere near as smooth as some of the skaters out there, so it was really humbling to go out.

that said, i bought the monthly pass (5 sessions at $7.50) and will be going every friday night at 10pm.

i think of myself as being in good shape, but i haven't had a workout like that in ages. i'm actually looking forward to playing for the rest of the year. i got two goals and about a half dozen assists (pay no mind to the fact that there were about 50 goals) so it was pretty rewarding.

and i can't wait to play at the 'dome. bring it on.

Once I get some gear I'll have to come out.

awesome.

remember that you have to call the rec centre to sign up. if you buy the monthly pass it's cheaper.

Well Chip, if its as fun as you say I am in. I play hockey at Midnight Fridays with a bunch of 'friends' who are becoming more annoying every year. This costs the same and it's earlier. Sounds good to me. See you there Friday!

Hmm, I live walking distance from there... I play outdoor shinny all winter but I haven't skated in MONTHS.

Is Full Equipment necessary?

Adult Shinny – All skill levels welcome (men and women). Full equipment is strongly recommended and minimum equipment of shin pads, helmet and gloves are required!

Man, that's a LONG way for me to go. Anyone know if there are rec centers near COP that do this?

Springbank is the only one I can think of... Maybe Crowfoot?

I'll check 'em out. I really want to get back into playing, but apparently it's pretty hard to find a team with decent ice times looking for sub par players. I would hate to go out and buy a bunch of equipment and only use it once or twice.

Hey Erv, I just called them and they said that they take the first two goalies that call after Friday at 12:01am. Goalies are free! You leave your name and number and I guess they call you back and let you know if you are one of the two.

lol...great, good to hear you're coming out.

please temper my joyous elation with the fact that i've never played on frozen water in any kind of organized fashion since younger than the age of 10.

that said...everyone there was pretty good. it was a pretty good pace, nobody was taking too long of a shift and, for the most part, the better players were the most courteous.

the most telling factor for me was that, in spite of my repititous ass-falling, they were still passing me the puck an hour into the game. i was easily the least talented guy out there and they still made me part of the play.

i have a plain white practice jersey and a nike helmet with a rather plain itech visor, short guy, about 5'8", if you're trying to pick me out of the crowd.

I'll keep an eye out CHip. I'll be the guy in all Gauthier equipment. By the way, how do they decided positions? Think I will have any trouble getting to play D?

they just rotate on the bench. if you replace a forward, you play forward kinda thing. you play about half and half, but just as often as you'll end up on the wing, there'll be a winger wanting to come back...just call 'i got D' and signal the other guy up.
