Hard to believe that Hartley coached the same group during last season's lockout shortened schedule....oh wait. When did things change?

Hartley had an entire full training camp and time to do things the way he planned on doing it last year. Training camp was rushed and quick last year, he couldn't implement the training camp he wanted, they also had no time for lessons in practice or any time for team building, they had to rush into the season and play games, that was basically it. He's said so himself on numerous occasions.
People seem to be putting a lot into the leadership and these team building exercises as one of the reasons these guys seem to be doing so well.. oh wait, whose putting those together?

This website has members that go to great lengths to defend Iginla and that's fine, because he is a true Flames legend. But to sit there and think that the reason this team is a lot closer is because of the coaching staff throwing a couple parties is... definitely odd to me. Friendships / relationships are built upon the people that are in them... not the guy who sets up the event. I'm friends with friends because we get along. If you look at the very wide selection of quotes over the last few years, and what they insinuate, I'm not sure how you could not conclude that Iginla was a problem as a leader on this team.
It's like the OJ murder trial... yeah he was not found guilty. Does anyone actually truly believe that? No, I guess there was nothing that grounded the theory that he is a murderer in 100% certainty. But god damn, there was a lot of evidence.
Mr. Cole a page back alludes, "Hey back off! Leave the guy alone! He's gone stop talking about it!" in his very best impression of that guy who video'd himself asking people to stop "attacking" Britney. But I notice in that post he states that Iginla "gave us his all every night" or something to that effect. Well that right there is my problem. He didn't give it his all every night. Look at how this team works. Look at how Iginla worked the last few years. If you can't see a difference, there will be no convincing you, but I didn't see consistent effort. I saw a quite comfortable guy that had not a lot motivating him, certainly not money. The concept of a Cup was for sure a long shot.
So anyway, why do people talk about it? Because it's a logical conclusion to draw from the multitude of quotes and information, this is a Flames message board, and it's probably what a lot of people believe. That's why.
It doesn't mean he wasn't the best Flame ever to play, or that we all hate him. But I think questioning his leadership abilities is, 100% in bounds and very likely linked quite strongly to how close this team really was over the last few years.

yes, it's called a metaphor. Im using hyperbole about evidence based assumptions. You're a smart internet bully so I'm sure you can figure that out.
Anyway I would never pin it all on Iginla. My post probably makes it seem like I am but I think it was really all of the old vet group. But Iginla does wear the 'C', and I don't totally get why nobody on this forum thinks it means anything to have that letter on your jersey.
"Magic wizard" or not.

Which, I agree with. Posts in this thread however aren't doing that, they're pinning it down on one person, which I think is kind of silly and you seem to agree with. The captain is the most important part of the leadership group but it's just one guy and I think the head coach and his coaching staff are infinity more valuable then who they choose to put a C and two A's on however. Obviously there are going to be exceptions to the rule but you don't find great leaders in the game without great coaches. Pinning it all on one guy is just a foolhardy exercise in my opinion.
The one thing that needed a change was the style of leadership. Iginla wasn't a vocal guy (at all?) and that was something we sorely needed to see change and I'm glad it did. We saw numerous times last season how Wideman mentioned how quiet the team was. Iginla cast a large shadow because of how his lengthy stay in Calgary and the dressing room needed to be louder. Giordano seems to have changed that but I'm left to wonder why he he didn't do it previously. Iginla seemed to have zero ego about himself on or off the ice and I doubt if one of his assistants piped up he would have been upset.

haha yeah that's all fair enough. Also a team can be as close as a bunch of besties at a sleepover but could still suck quite badly so I would think there's a point where team chemistry needs skill to really bring in the wins.
It's a fun team to follow this year though, the most fun to follow in years for sure.

Flames go Skeet Shooting = blast Iginla thread?
Can we please show one of (of not THE) greatest Flames of all-time, an all-around incredible guy and an absolute joy to watch since I was a kid a little more respect than this?
You think he wasn't a great captain? You're entitled to your opinion. Most players and media around the NHL would disagree with you, and most that have been around the NHL for the past decade regard Iginla as one of the greatest of all time. He had consistently been regarded as one of the best captains in the NHL. Your opinions are valid, but it's gross to pop into this thread and see people jumping on the opportunity to rip Iginla apart.
Really? Iginla? Nothing is sacred.

I heard they tried to fill Butler with helium and make it look like an accident. Unfortunately he didn't float. Oddly enough his voice didn't change either. Go figure.
