Joey Mac's not going anywhere as long as he keeps winning.

Ramo doesn't require waivers because his years in the KHL don't exist in the NHL's eyes, apparently.

Disagree. As with Stajan, there's no long term fit for him in Calgary. If there was, he would've recieved a two year deal. Ramo and Berra are the future. At least until Gilles and one of broissoit or Ortio pan out.

I am sure Ramo is going to get his chance durring the west coast trip. As for fear of losing him on waivers? I see very little chance that a team would pick up Ramo and his 2 year $2.75 million contract if he was not good enough to play for the flames.

"I think the theory with Abbotsford and Calgary is they want Berra to play the load of games and you might see Brossoit and Ortio flipping in and out of here all year,'' said Aces coach Rob Murray.

I wonder how much say in who Alaska plays the Flames have. Would stink to have these guys sitting behind some ECHL journeyman up there.

I would imagine quite heavily. Just a guess but the benefits of having an NHL (via AHL) affiliate would likely have a lot of weight on the decision process. At least I'd think.

I would think bot side would benefit from trying to play nice in the sandbox
Certainly or the Aces, they are going to get more talent with an NHL affiliation than without, co-operating is a small price to pay for the players they receive.

MacDonald has made some great saves and picked up some big wins but he didnt look very good at all against the Devils, his rebound control was awful. I think you will see Ramo a lot more in the next couple of weeks than what we have saw from him so far.

I hope so. It's cool that MacDonald is picking up some wins, but Ramo needs to get some starts. Ramo definitely has more potential than MacDonald.
I can't imagine Ramo is impressed that they dragged him out of the KHL to sit on the bench either. I know it's only been 4 games, but still. I thought his performance against the Caps was fine, they just took too many stupid penalties and let Ovechkin have his way on the powerplay.

Wasn't it confirmed by Feaster that Ramo doesn't need to clear waivers to be sent down? Only MacDonald has to.

Berra and Ramo don't need to go through waivers, but from what I understand Ramo may require waivers at some point this year, if he plays enough games. Not sure how it works though, so don't quote me on it.

Both Devils goals were squarely his fault. One was a rebound that he kicked directly into the slot, and the other was him overplaying the shot way too far and getting out of position. Bouma turning into the second coming of Yelle was the only reason that the Flames hung on to win. Ramo better be getting some more starts soon because it makes zero sense to keep MacDonald considering how many goaltenders Calgary has in the pipes

As a goalie who signed his first contract at the age of 20, he is waiver exempt for 4 years after signing his contract or 80 NHL games played.
It has been 7 years since he signed his first contract with the Lightning. Because he played the last 4 seasons in the KHL, the NHL apparently doesn't count those years, so they consider it to be only 3 years since he signed his first contract.
Right now, he has 49 NHL games played, so he's waiver exempt until he plays 31 more NHL games (for the purposes of free agency, a goalie doesn't get a game played unless he played at least 30 minutes in the game, and Ramo had 6 games in his time in Tampa that were less than 30 minutes, so he might only have 43 games played if waiver exemption uses that same criteria).

It seems that Reto Berra has been playing most of the games and they need to get Jani Ortio some playing times in Alaska then later on he'll be back in Abby. It's been done before and I don't see any problem with it. I don't think the Calgary Flames will do the same thing to Karri Ramo though. Ramo will see action in this West Coast trip and when he does, he better show he belong in the NHL so he gets another start again right away and not sit a few games. Hartley is just playing the goaltender with the hot hand. Joey Mac won 3 games for them that's why he is playing.

Still don't get sending Ortio to Alaska before he gets a game in Abbotsford or Brossoit gets a game in Alaska (he played only one preseason game). Then as soon as Brossoit is called up, he is given a start for the Heat and gives up nine goals. Meanwhile Ortio gets a shutout in his first start for Alaska. I understand rotating the goalies but not before Brossoit gets a chance to round into form. Makes even less sense in hindsight.

To be fair to Brossoit, prior to that start he relieved Bera and didn't allow a goal in 34 minutes as Abbotsford fell just short of coming back to tie. He did only face 9 shots in those 34 mins.
I just don't think the 9 goal game (5 PP goals btw) tells the whole story.
Agree with you that the switch after assignments is a little odd.
