Should the Pens have lent Crosby to the WJC?
Should the Bruins have lent Bergeron or Seguin?
What about the Nuje?
Isles with Tavares?
Point is if an 18 year old is playing meaningful minutes for his NHL team, it would be beyond stupid to take him out of your lineup.

Crosby-No
Seguin-Yes
Bergeron- Was lent to the WJHC
RNH- Yes
Tavares- No
If Monahan slows down and is playing roughly 3rd line minutes with limited to no PP time I think he should be considered to go. Not sure if that qualifies as meaningful minutes or not. If he keeps up his current pace (no I don't expect him to be at a PPG pace) or close then he stays with the Flames.

^^^
thats my point. If he's playing meaningful minutes you leave him on the team
Some are saying you lend him regardless because "it's a good experience", "it's good for his development", "great chance to lead a team", etc. if he's struggling, you lend him. But if he's playing top six minutes, you don't even think about pulling him from your line up.
FYI. We were talking about 18 year olds and Bruins never lent Bergeron to team canada as an 18 year old.
He only played in 2005 because of the lockout

I think the decision on SM is all about the money. And the extra year on the ELC that is saved by sending him back to junior now - is far more valuable a few years from now when the rest of the team is more competitive.
Its foolhardy to expect an 18 year old to compete at the NHL level for a full season. And this year's edition of the Flames doesn't need his talents.
He's going back to junior.

Friedman had a good point today - the Olympic break will be extremely helpful for kids like Monahan to survive the grind of an NHL season.

Ya misremembered that. Well they should have lent him that year as well.

If it is about money even a tiny little bit then the Flames are making a stupid decision.
Money should play absolutely no role at all in determining whether he stays or goes.

For some teams, that would be a big factor.
Fortunately, for the Flames it won't be a factor at all.

No they shouldn't have. He had a great 18 year old rookie season scoring 16 goals. He even made the World Championship team for Canada in 2004. He was one of few players (only one ever?) to play in the WHC before the WJC.
But I do agree with you that the flames should not base this decision on finances

That doesn't make sense, there are a plethora of good solid reasons why sending Monahan to the World Juniors is a good idea but that definitely isn't one of them. You're beyond reaching with that. The WJC is a grind, it's an intense couple of weeks and it won't be a break.
Enoch Root, I definitely see benefits of Monahan going to the World Juniors, but I think if the guy is playing in the NHL and being a contributing member of that NHL club he should stay. The World Juniors, while great, is a step down. We hear time and time again how fast the NHL is and how that is the biggest adjustment players have to make. I really don't see the point in having Monahan readjust to a slower game then have to adapt to the faster NHL again.
To be totally honest I think people mostly just want to see a Flames prospect do well on the big stage like the World Juniors. It's a bragging right among NHL fans. I think it has more to do with them wanting to see him on that stage then what's best for his development.

I think Monahan should go to the WJC. it'll be a once in a lifetime event for him to win it. He'll have an entire career to play NHL games

Lets say Sean is top three on the team in points playing ~17-20 minutes a night. We're sixth place in our division and 5 points behind fourth place for the final playoff spot. We've got 5 division games coming up during the holidays.
Would you send him to the WJC since he has his whole career to play NHL games?

I have seen plenty of moves made for hockey reasons.
If money dictates every decision no 18 year olds would ever play in NHL and rarely would 19/20 year olds.
If Monahan spends the next few years playing well enough to earn a big contract the Flames will be much better off even if they do have to pay him 6+ million a year early.

Also, sending a guy down to avoid paying him and pushing his UFA status back a year is a sure-fire way to deteriorate his loyalty when that UFA status finally approaches.
You don't do it for money - either he's ready or he's not
