Was this here yet? Colborne interview from the Flames site.

http://video.flames.nhl.com/videocen...49278&catid=11

Seems like a dedicated guy and handles the interview well, especially with the lack of sleep. Talks about his injury a little bit too.

So... what are projections for Colburne? A lot of talk about a style similar to Joe Thornton, someone mentioned Eric Daze too (not a bad thing).

Expected points? 20 goal, 50 point guy?

Overall happy with the trade even if it doesn't amount to much, very small payment for a guy I know was highly coveted a few years ago. Intensity issue do scare me a bit though, but we'll see. Glad to see benefits of Brian Burke coming through... love the makeup of the team, lots to look forward to and finally some direction.

He looked (was) better last year playing under the protection of Glencross.

He isn't bad ... he just isn't good... There are very very few teams where he slots in as a top-6 #2 RW.

He needs to play with better players to make him look good.

He isn't the guy that would carry a Baertschi/Backlund line.
I disagree, Stempniak did not rely on anybody else last season.

He was tied for the team lead in scoring. He had 47 hits (2 behind Glencross), 17 blocked shots (3 more then Glencross), and 32 takeaways (led all forwards).

Him and Stajan were the best 200ft players on the team last year and it wasn't even close. Had nothing to do with his linemates last year.

He is likely not a top 6 guy on a good team but he has improved his 200ft game enough that he is now a legitimate 3rd line option.

I'll paraphrase Burke:

Quote:
"This is not a black-and-blue player, this is a big bodied player."

"He has not been able to crack the lineup as a top 6 forward. It's our plan that given his size, speed and hockey IQ he could turn into a pretty special bottom 6 player."

"I'll give you a player that's a similar circumstance, David Steckel, who was drafted as an offensive player in the first round by the LA Kings. When they realized he wasn't going to get there as an offensive player they turned him into a defensive player, and he was a pretty special defensive player for a number of years."

"Joe is bigger and stronger and skates faster than David Steckel. Can we make him into new and improved Dave Steckel, that type of player? I think so, that's the plan."

I'm personally looking forward to seeing how he turns out, however it's funny to see how people were claiming the Kaberle trade was another great Burke trade for getting Colborne out of Boston.

He still has the potential to be a top 6 forward, bigger guys usually do take longer to hit their stride, but if he were to become a Brian Boyle type I wouldn't be too disappointed.

In any case, seems clear that not a lot of points are to be expected to begin with, as they work on his defensive game.

Feasters words on Colborne (at the very end):

Quote:
"We believe that he can become a very very good, very effective 3rd line center. At the same time we're not going to pigeonhole him and say that's all you can be. We believe that he has the skill necessary that he can play in the top 6."

"We did not trade for him with the expectation that he could step in as a top 2 center iceman. We traded for him with the expectation that he could become a very very good 3rd line center."

Ironic that it appears Stempniak would do very well in Ricardo's own stat category.

I think you have to account for the change in environment.

That can really rejuvenate some players/careers. Especially knowing he is going to be starting on an NHL roster, with an excellent chance to stick if he performs.

Kaberle still turned to garbage after the trade and the leafs also got a first so it was a great trade by Burke

The Flames have some great young talent at the C position that will hopefully come to fruition in the next 3-4 years.

Some really great depth, but still missing that game-breaking superstar (I see Monahan as more of a 1B/2 guy). I don't think we will be a contender till we find our own Stamkos/Tavares in this position. Hopefully in the next 2-3 drafts that happens....just need to be patient I guess.

I think this is an example of management tempering expectations. Colborne will become the player he becomes easier if the press aren't hounding him daily about not reaching some sky-high expectations. Burke is setting the bar low (in this case) & easing some of the pressure.

3rd/4th line centre is where I want to see him anyway. Playing on the 3rd line this season he'll probably get to play plenty with some of our more offence-oriented creative guys like Sven, Cammy & Hudler. He has good hockey sense & from all reports he has sick, sick hands. No reason to think he can't exceed himself. I can't wait to see which version of Joe Colborne steps out onto the Saddledome ice.

Makes me think Joel Otto is what they want to turn him into, I wont complain if it works.
