Weird I'm surprised Hall or any of the new kids didn't get it would be kind of harsh to be an oiler and some guy comes in and is a captain right away especially for smyrh

My hope is that there isn't some sort of issue with Hall and Eakins. Word had it that Hall was getting beat by Smyth in fitness drills at the start of training camp. That wouldn't sit well with Eakins. If he felt Hall wasn't in good enough shape to start TC, there is no way he was going to name him captain. Now how will that sit with Hall? I guess we may find out eventually. If this passes without him being angry or mad about it, the Oilers are his team for a long time, and I think he'll eventually be captain.

A player being pissed off with a coach isn't a bad thing, hell Hall should be pissed off if that's true. Hall is young and Ference won't be around forever so he'll get another chance I'm sure.

I guess there isn't much on the roster outside of Hall that seems like an obvious fit. Smid is insanely overrated by Oiler fans and would seem like a possibility and I guess Ryan Smyth is still there.
I can't remember Ference ever even wearing an A anywhere so it seems odd to bring in a new guy who hasn't been a clear leader on his previous teams and make him the A.
|
In the Bruins documentary from the summer, the Bruins brass repeatedly mentioned Ference's character and leadership. When they decided to let him walk, they acknowledgded that it would be his leadership they would miss most.

Got to be honest, when I saw the headline, totally thought it was some one trying to be funn - cannot believe they would not name one of their young stars into that role.

If Sutter hadn't traded him, and Ference remained a Flame to this day, he'd likely have our C instead of Gio.

He's an interm Captain at best for this year. He's there to shelter the younger players from the pressures of playing hockey, the media, and maybe having a coach that's not a nice guy like the last two coaches that they've had.
That's right Eakins is a jerk plain and simple and he won't stand idly by while the young kids do what they've done with the last couple of coaches which is basically ignore him, ignore the defensive responsibilities and ignore the game plan.
Ference is there as the guy that will pat them on the head and tell them to do what the coaches want.
But when this team fails to make the playoffs again, and they will fail to make the playoffs again, all bets are off.

Sadly, great choice by the Oilers.
Ference was the ONE guy I wanted the Flames to acquire in the FA frenzy. Imagine a Flames world where Butler was no longer, and Ference was wearing a Flames uniform.
I dared to dream and my dream was crushed.

It wasn't just who we lost but what it meant that we lost him and how it happened. That was among Darryl's bigger mistakes (and that's a tough list to top).

Yeah, listening to that interview... really seemed to be the beginning of the end, even though we did technically get the better player of the deal.

Where are the Oilers fans who were saying Gio wasn't a good enough hockey player to be a captain? lol
actually pretty sure that was another un-named message board but still. At least he has played a game for the team

I hate the oilers and I hate this move. Ference is a stand up guy and I can only see this move improving the team.
It sucks that I have to hate him now

you are assuming a lot here....unlikely he would still be with the team. Wouldn't be a cup champ. Not to mention Gio is the better player by far.
who knows but really this is a little far fetched...and that scenario is far different you are talking about a guy being on a team for a decade being captain not a guy with zero games under his belt

Just curious what personal experience you've had with Eakins in order to make such a empirical statement?

Beat me to it. I also wonder why Easkins is considered to be a joke, other than he's an Oilers coach.
Lots of folks here think this is a great decision - and it is. However to those who think this is somehow a slam at the young guys like Hall and Ebs or an indication they're not good enough leaders, this move is simply to let the kids develop without adding this pressure. Give them a year or two and one of them will be the captain.
This is a great decision by the Oilers.

He's a jerk because he demands results and he rips your head off if you don't produce results. Unlike the last two coaches that basically couldn't get the Oilers to play any kind of system or play without the puck. Eakins will demand that they do it and bend the young Oilers to his will.
That's what I mean by jerk.
the Oilers have moved away from a teaching coach to a results coach and a bit of a non players coach.
It will be up to the Oilers to adapt to this or perish.

A jerk that past players seem to have the utmost respect for and appreciated/enjoyed playing for him. I suppose there's a right way and a wrong way to be a jerk - he seems to have figured out the right way. Time will tell if it transfers at the NHL level.
