You might 'agree' with what Kessel did, but that doesn't change anything.
I 'agree' with what Clarkson did - I want my teammates to stick up for each other and as a coach, GM or teammate, I am thanking Clarkson for his actions.
But that does not make his suspension any less justified.
Well that depends on whether or not the NHL 'agrees' with what Kessel did. They obviously don't think it was fully justified, but Shanahan sure didn't seem to have an issue with the first slash as defensive. If he doesn't go after him the second time I doubt he'd have gotten anything, might not have even gotten a penalty.

The Following User Says Thank You to valo403 For This Useful Post:
Why would he be? He swatted at his tree trunk of legs a few times, not his face, basically harmless and not "dirty" whatsoever.
While I don't think he needs to apologize (maybe to the mirror for making himself look like a fool), but the slash is most definitely dirty and has the potential for harm.
Right, because Scott was just looking to give him a cuddle
Nope, but I'd say it's very debatable exactly what Scott would have done if him and Kessel locked up. He's an NHL tough guy, he knows who he is and isn't suppossed to fight, I think everyone is making a huge assumptions if they think Scott tees off on Kessel the way he could.
Scott's role in that situation is more symbolic than anything else, wrestle Kessle to the ground, give him a couple of 25% shots and that still sends the mess with our small guys I'll mess with yours message Buffalo (mistakenly) was looking to send.
I'd be shocked if Scott was given the opportunity, if he actually laid down a significant beating on Kessel, wouldn't be in his best interest.
It's more of an indicator of what a joke the league is when it comes to handing out suspensions.
Let me make sure I understand. If someone two hands one of our boys across the legs this season, breaks their leg, you will feel it's a joke if said player gets suspended?

I don't think it's debatable at all. You don't drop your gloves and clamor after a guy just to give him a little shake. Scott obviously doesn't know who he is and isn't supposed to fight, if that were the case he wouldn't have dropped his gloves with Kessel.

Ridiculous
I highly doubt that Scott would have ever even punched Kessel...in fact Rob Ray was on the fan this AM and said as much....that Scott said to Kessel "Phil i have to grab you, i wont urt you but i have to do something with you"...or something similar. To which Kessel said "OK then"...which is where the nonsense came from in regards to the report that Kessel agreed to fight him, that was definately not the case.
Again though, Kessell had other option than turning into Tommy Tomahawk with his stick. Start skating away the second Scott tells him...line up 3- steps back for the puck drop...skate like hell right to the bench....all of which would be preferable to endangering everyone around the melee with wildly swinging a piece of lumber at temple level in an attempt to injure someone.
The precedent is set now though.....if you are an NHL player and are afraid of a guy trying to engage you, start swinging like a chandelier on the titanic. The most you will receive punishment wise is missing 3 meaningless games, 2 of which you were not slated to play anyhow.
Brilliant....and probably leads to all kinds of issues this season so the morons in the justice system are forced to get the whole thing right.
If this was Sven or Johnny getting jumped by a goon twice their size we would be screaming bloody murder.
Shanahan made the right call. Trying to fight someone WAYYYY out of your weight class is not a hockey play, its a classless scrub play that has never had a place anywhere in hockey at any time.
How did he make the right call? He didn't address the "classless scrub" play what so ever.
Scott is receiving 0 suspension for being a classeless scrub as you put it. So how did Shanahan address that or make the right call?
All Shanahan did was let everyone in the league know that if you are star player, your reckless use of a stick will be tolerated, so don't worry.
Let me make sure I understand. If someone two hands one of our boys across the legs this season, breaks their leg, you will feel it's a joke if said player gets suspended?
If McGrattan pulled that move on some small skill guy and wound up taking a slash when the guy defended himself I wouldn't be calling for a suspension, and I doubt there would be one based on the reasoning Shanahan presented. Kessel was punished for the follow up slashes, not for defending himself with the first one.

You haven't watched much hockey then. I've seen a lot of "different" responses when the gloves drop in my day, and you know what I've never seen..........an NHL tough guy tee off on a small superstar who didn't do anything themselves to provoke the attack.

I can't stand this. Basically you are asking guys who are actually capable of playing hockey to not play hockey due to the presence of some neanderthal threatening them, and that's somehow okay?
I don't by Ray's version of events for a second. Scott's not looking to cuddle.
And temple level? Did the temple get relocated to the shin?

I'm comfortable with Kessle's first slash, I'm not comfortable with 3 pre season games for the subsequent slashes that had nothing to do with self defense. Wrong message was just sent by the league.

Yeah, hardly watch at all
I haven't seen it either, which is what made Scott's actions so pathetic.

Be that as it may, it's clear the suspension hasn't made an impression on Kessel to reconsider his actions. At least he's got a history of supplemental discipline for stick swinging now. His repeat offender status should factor in if he continues this way.
