Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' seven-year extension with #oilers carries an AAV of $6M -- same as Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle.

Has RNH shown enough to be given a 7 year deal already? For some reason, I thought he has two injury plagued seasons.

7 years @6 mill/year.
so the oilers have about 26 million in capspace next season, but have to fill about 10 roster spots:
4-5 forwards (basically need to build their bottom 2 lines)
4 dmen (only have smid/ference signed)
2 goalies (starter/backup)
even if some of their ELC guys get promoted to the big club, they need to go out and get at least 2 top3 dmen and a starting goalie.
i was assuming it would look a lot worse, but it's not too bad cap wise i think.

Hasn't really shown enough and he has his shoulder problems. Should be interesting to see how this pans out.

That's why it was a waste to bring him in his rookie year. 20 year old players making $6 million kind of throws salary structures out of whack he's nowhere near the prime years of his career and already getting that money. He's a good player but that's too early to get 1st line center money especially considering he kind of sucked last year. Oilers are now paying him top dollar in his developemental years. How will they be able to retain Yakupov, Schultz and still build around these guys?

So should one expect Yakupov to soon be asking for this type of money/term too?

In isolation, it's not a bad deal (if he can stay healthy).
Salary structure into consideration though, they are entering a critical time. They really need to start showing results soon in their rebuilding.

Jeeze, as good as he could end up being that's $1,800,000 for every point he had in the NHL last year

Not sure this is the kind of guy you give 7-year term to.
He can't stay healthy and hasn't even shown that he's a consistent PPG guy yet, yet alone a franchise player to build around. Might have been a prime candidate to give a bridge contract to.
He's not on the same calibre as Eberle and Hall yet but understandable that the Oilers gave him this deal - they had to.
When you sell losing on purpose to pick 1st three years straight, you are pot-committed to those players and can't let them go.
Too bad the Oilers picked three very weak draft years to pick first, and arguably picked the wrong guy two of those three years.
Landeskog would have been the better choice than RNH.

The Hawks did it differently in that while their best players were on manageable ELC's they won the 2008 cup so they could surround them with guys like Hossa, Sharp, Campbell, etc. The Oilers are doing it exactly opposite. Will be interesting to see how this fares. I fully expect them to improve over the coming years but by how much when the supporting cast is going to be very average surrounding these players?

I'm sure they'll live to regret this deal. The most entertaining thing about the oilers is how stupid they are lol.

Steve Begin scored just as many goals last season in less games than RNH
